Why thank you! A lawyer's tools are words, language, writing, and using them to weave stories, make arguments, and persuade others to what you need them to do, all part of the art of negotiation. I actually write all day! I find most lawyers I know have a creative side, writing books and poetry, performing in amateur theater, painting, designing or making needlework, building highly original birdhouses.

My efforts would have fallen flat if others had not responded, making awesome contributions. I mean Joanne adds Baggage Car and Lynda describes Second Class, suddenly we have a train., and it has a life of its own. Two of the best additions recently were Amy's gnarly cat and JoyD's magic trunk. Those constant little nuggets all give me and all of you what we need to spin the rest.

Holly R W | 3104 comments I'm not officially in the challenge, but I'm enjoying all of the fun! You guys are writing your own short story as you go along.

@Amy, I may be wrong about this, but there is now a magic trunk in one of the train's cars (the caboose?). You can reach into it and pull out any type of game or puzzle you want.

When I get tired of my day to day, ordinary life, I may just hitch a ride on PBT's train. I'll be a stow-away.

Find a train uniform Holly and come to the Baggage car, we need a bouncer to keep Theresa from out!

Holly R W | 3104 comments I can't see myself as the bouncer type, but o.k., I'm ready! (My physical therapist would get a good laugh out of this.)

Theresa | 15499 comments Joanne thinks she's so funny....

Half of PBT's non-playing members could be stowing away at the front of the train eating and drinking the train dry and no one would know!

message 60: by Joanne (new)

Joanne (joabroda1) | 12562 comments I say we call him gnarly! And, come on, Theresa if anyone knows who is stowing away, it is you!

message 61: by Amy (new)

Amy | 12907 comments The train is throwing away it’s a Architect? A cat named Gnarly? This is madness! Total Anarchy! I am now nominating Theresa, Joanne, and Joy, and Tom to the PBT’s Subdue Train’s legislative governing board. And maybe we can open up nominations for president of the Board. Or just vote in the Duo of Joanne and Theresa as co’s. Tom can straighten out any difficulty I’m sure, and Joy has the bottomless magic trunk! All I do is drink and read and use the lint roller as a combination back scratcher.

Oh, I'm already making use of the magic trunk! It contains any extra things we want - puzzles, board games, etc. I added a couple of board games if anyone wants to play. :-) (Settlers of Catan and Carcassonne)

message 64: by Theresa (last edited Jan 28, 2023 05:17PM) (new)

Theresa | 15499 comments If I ever make it out of the Caboose into Baggage, I am up for Carcassone!

We need those farther along to read faster and get into the Private Cafe Car and the Royal Coach to keep the stowaways out!

Good news to those in Second Class Lounge: a renovated car is replacing the current one at the next supply and fueling stop. It will be fully outfitted including comfy reading chairs with ottomans, upgraded lighting and devices to stream BBC adaptations of classics. There are also attendants pushing around snack and drinks carts at regular intervals - no more dirty glasses, watered down alcohol, and stale saltines.

I hear our new clerks in the caboose raised holy heck with the RR about the poor state os the second Class lounge.

Photos forthcoming.

See what happened? My inserting Tom into the picture raised Theresa's hackles enough for her to do something about the condition of Baggage! Haha! And now Tom can rummage through his baggage and find a book and join us reading. Tom is here for the long haul, enjoy the mature eye candy ladies!

Dog wrangling is fine with me-Cindy gets the mass group of cats. Sorry -more than one or two at one time make me sneeze continuously. I will tolerate them, but shall not take control over them. (As if it's even possible to control cats)!

It is in the caboose as of last night Cindy-pull the game out for yourself and hide it under your books. That way when Joy moves on you have it!

message 86: by Amy (new)

Amy | 12907 comments I adores Luiz Velez! It was close to, or in my top 10!

I was just talking to a patient of mine, who happens to be a veterinary assistant. She was talking about how dangerous lilies are for cats. I never knew that. But it’s like almost fatal for them. So as much as I don’t like this. Gnarly character, apparently it’s really important that people not bring certain flowers on the train.

Look how crazy I have become. I’m actually worried about imaginary flowers from an imaginary cat who I don’t even like on an imaginary train. But I did feel like I had to warn everybody. That should give you a clue to my recent state of mind.

message 87: by Amy (new)

Amy | 12907 comments I need to just put out a consolidated, tracking thread, which I found really so clear and helpful. I don’t even think you’re the last one on the train. But naturally that could change at anytime.

Theresa | 15499 comments JoAnne's smuggled in Tom is on litterbox and dog walking duties. And, while on suspension from Border Patrol, she is assisting!

@Amy and @Cora - no different than immersion in a book! It's all in your minds ... or is it? Alternate or parallel universes are real.

message 89: by Robin P (new)

Robin P | 5728 comments Yes, one meme I saw was about things that only readers understand. One was "feeling happy or sad for people who don't even exist".

Sometimes when I read books set in England between the world wars and everybody is happy WWI is over, I feel bad knowing they and their kids will be in a worse one soon. The positive is extending our empathy. I paid more attention to the news from Afghanistan after I read The Kite Runner, because I "knew" someone from there.

This is true. There are other plants that are dangerous for cats, too, but every year around Easter this reminder always goes out.

NancyJ (nancyjjj) | 11060 comments Achoo! I love fictional cats even though I’m allergic to them in real life. But now after reading about cats on the imaginary train I just boarded, I’m sneezing like crazy. Is this a weird form of reader’s empathy?

The Caboosians know how to par-tay! A few of us don't seem to be moving on any too soon. We have the best amenities, so why should we?

message 97: by Joy D (new)

Joy D | 10061 comments Anita, I have a question about the new rules:

Regarding
a) If you read a book longer than 500 pages you get to roll an extra die for every incremental 100 pages. So a 500 page book let's you roll two dice on your next turn. A 600 page book let's you roll 3 dice, and so on.

How does this work in terms of communicating number of pages for a completed book to qualify for extra dice on the roll? Do we just put it in the thread for roll requests?

Regarding:
b) If you land on a book that has the same tag as the monthly tag, you will get an extra move to use when you wish:
5-25 taggers - move forward 1 space
25-50 taggers - move forward 2 spaces
50-100 taggers move forward 5 spaces
More than 100 taggers - roll two dice
This award must be noted on your tracking thread at the time you land on the book that earns it. The book does not need to be completed/reviewed in the month with the tag . . .this bonus is triggered when you land on the book.

Some of us are starting to accumulate these types of bonuses. How do we use them? Do we just post in the roll request thread or are we free to use them whenever we want without notifying anyone?

Great question. For the page count situation, yes, please just put it in your roll request and maybe let me know the book title so I can double check it. Just a reminder, we use the Amazon hard cover for the definitive page count.

For the tag situation, please note on your tracking that the book fits the tag as soon as you land on it and how many taggers there are.

When you want to actually take your extra move forward, please let me know on your roll request, and I will denote it as your roll plus X. ie. 6-2 (+5). If you want to see your roll first, that's okay, but I do need you to tell me (in the roll request thread) that you are moving additional spaces just so I can note it in my spreadsheet, and Joanne is alerted as well.

message 99: by Joy D (last edited Feb 03, 2023 08:21PM) (new)

Joy D | 10061 comments Thanks, Anita. I have been noting the books that fit the tag in my tracking thread. I haven't come to my tomes yet, but there's quite a few down further in my Porter level list. I will make sure to note them when requesting the next roll, if applicable.

Question: Do we go to Amazon to find the hard cover page count or is it clearly listed somewhere in the "edition listings" on GR?

message 100: by NancyJ (last edited Feb 05, 2023 09:49AM) (new)

NancyJ (nancyjjj) | 11060 comments I thought the rule was always to use the Goodreads listings to find hardcover info. Goodreads seems to list all editions. I relied on this database when checking my longer books. I used my computer’s find-in-page tool to search for hardcovers. I don’t think Amazon is workable for older books, since they only list books they sell. It’s really cumbersome to check the used books. They only sell trade paperbacks for some books now.
