Read in the mid 80s, possibly older. Not sure if it was a short story or a book. The kid is a massive hoarder, his room is so filled with junk that he has trouble walking, though it's played for laughs. I remember his mother telling him to 'get everything off the floor' so he hangs everything on the walls, and him losing the boat he got for his birthday because he was too busy hauling home some old bedsprings he found.
