Glad I live in the Midwest where it is not unusual for strangers to talk to each other.

Yes, it seems to be a regional thing like asking "How are you?" with some expecting actual answer, while others expect "Fine. Thanks. How are you?" reply "Fine," and move on.

I recently read something similar to this about the cocktail Manhattan. The area code for Manhattan is 212, the cocktail is 2 oz bourbon or rye, 1 ounce sweet vermouth, and 2 shakes of angostura bitters.

However, the creation of the cocktail predates the use of area codes. So it's just a coincidence.

Try looking for it under the original title, MATANGO. It's now easier to find under that name -- copies of ATTACK OF THE MUSHROOM PEOPLE are getting scarce.

You're welcome. Since I wasn't sure how good a job GR would do spreading the word I posted in my groups that have chat folder or somewhere else appropriate to post.

Book Concierge (tessabookconcierge) | 1585 comments Well, I thought the GR glitch with bajillions of "new" messages shown in red (when there might be only one or even none) was over. But this one is still showing 50 unread messages even though I was just here yesterday catching up. S*I*G*H

Well, there's some improvement but it's not fixed. Hope they're not thinking, "Good enough." and moving on.

What is your favorite genre to read?

I read everything but I do love biographies!

L J | 245 comments Julie wrote: "What is your favorite genre to read?

I don't think I have a favorite genre. I may mostly read a genre, then drift into another genre, then another... science fiction to mystery to historical fiction, back to mystery, then to romantic suspense... At this time I read a lot of books with paranormal elements including cozy mystery, romance, urban fantasy and more.

I also read biography, especially audio versions of autobiography narrated by author. I bale if narrator, who supposedly at least helped write the book, sound like they never before saw the material and are bad at cold readings.

I read history, sociology and more including ancient history, anthropology, mythology and other things of interest to me. I love that with the internet I can access university studies, dissertations, etc. without going to library. Did you know it's currently believed that skunks of today are descendants of skunks who survived the ice age by living in isolated warm areas? Could explain why skunk coat patterns vary so much by region.

I seldom post non-fiction I read on Goodreads because I so often read parts of non-fiction books not the whole book.

What are your favorite charities? Our church just participated in the Church World Services' Crop Walk which raises money to supply food for the poor.

I very much enjoy mysteries, but I like historical fiction and nonfiction too.

I usually say my favorite charity is my kids! Aside from that, I donate and occasionally do volunteer work for our local humane society.

Anyone that knows me on Goodreads knows I read a lot of bios, autobios, and memoirs. Also, true crime and history. Actually, pretty much anything nonfiction.

I tend to focus on the arts and education. I'm on the board of a local theatre company, and also the Friends of the Library. I've previously served on the boards of a private school that focuses on at-risk students and our local public museum. And I was on the committee that organizes the art museum's major fund-raising event for over 20 years.

Volunteered:
Rescue, foster, etc. mostly cats
Friends of the Library - book cleanup, sales, etc.
Art museum - desk, docent, etc.
Misc. other things.

I add dried cranberries to my oatmeal cookies (plus blueberries, cherries and nuts). They're also wonderful roasted with meat.

Dried cranberries added to stuffing/dressing. I don't stuff but I've done chicken in a slow cooker on top of dressing.

Wonder if any of these fake accounts were flagged by anyone as suspicious?

The Mary Sue tells the tale but be warned it is long and twisty.

Goodreads has a 'review bombing' problem — and wants its users to help solve it

Kind of wish NPR article left out "librarians" as it holds out false hope that anyone other than staff can deal with problem.

Fishface | 753 comments I was determined to win something this year in the bake/crafts raffle and bought a slew of tickets. I won PRACTICALLY EVERYTHING. The butter-pecan meltaways, the orange sugar cookies, the triple-berry pie, and last but not least, the Aztec death whistle which is not a dessert, but a 3D-printed working death whistle that also glows in the dark. Weirdly, I also won my own oatmeal cookies so I guess I put my ticket in the wrong envelope?

The case manager in my dept won my chocolate-orange cake, my oatmeal cookies were given to the crestfallen case manager in the dept down the hall, and one of the youth peers won my "worry worm" keyrings.

Fishface | 753 comments I found a book here I wanted to read, called Extreme Planets: A Science Fiction Anthology of Alien Worlds, but recoiled when the first copy I could find online was $503, and the cheapest was $421 plus shipping from Germany.

You know the library didn't have one, right?

Well, sir, tonight I thought of Book Finder and tapped the book into the search box, just to see. There was a copy up for sale on eBay for $20. IT'S MINE NOW
