Week 2, Roll 10
Book: Better Than the Movies from Lynn Painter
Rating: 3 stars
How it fits: Standalone book and Author L
Review:
A simple YA enemy to lover story with an extremely simple plot. 1 extra star for adorable characters.
Liz and Wes are neighbors who always get on each other's nerves. When her childhood crush moves back in town, she does everything to win him over, including making a deal with her obnoxious neighbour.
As she spends more time with Wes, she is suprised to learn that he isn't as bad as she thinks and she may even like his company.
A simple, cosy coming off age love story.

Review:
This book is the first of a spin off series from the Vampire Knitting club Oxford (VKCO)series and I really enjoyed this first instalment. We met the main character Jennifer towards the end of the first series as she is the best friend of Lucy from the VKCO series, and we start to learn more about her in this new series as she moves to Cornwall to help Lucy's Aunty start a new knitting shop. It had a nice mix of familiar characters and new characters and was obviously also a set up book for the rest of the series, but I liked that it had all the fun of the original series as well as new and interesting characters and new secrets that I look forward to learning more about. I am excited to see where this new series goes.

Review: I missed Kate and Curran. I hope the authors plan on writing more with these two. The events take place 7 years after Curran stepped down from being beast lord and Kate gave up being in charge of Atlanta. They moved to Wilmington, North Carolina with their son Conlan and are in the process of building a "house". Conlan becomes friends with the contractors nephew and in the middle of asking his mom to make sandwiches Conlan lets it drop that his friends brother has been kidnapped and thus begins the adventure. We all know that Kate and Curran will not just sit idly by while a child is in trouble.
Kate kicks some asses and takes names afterwards..err a head actually. She gets some answers but will need to fight several creatures and magic users to get where she needs to go to save the boy. The adventure was a fun ride back in an old world that is so familiar, yet different. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that there will be more books.

Review: Normally I'm not a fan of established couples or second chance relationships unless it's part of a series. But I liked this one. I was a little frustrated that the guys didn't just sit down and hash it out with a nice long conversation. Get It all out there on the table. Honestly what Von did towards the end was completely fucked up. But if Justin just told Von what was going on then none of that would have happened. It was all due to bad communication. It all worked out in the end though.

This first in series featuring Lady Caroline was a light, easy cozy, set in Nice, France, post WWI. I enjoyed the story and mystery, even though the characters sometimes felt two-dimensional. Excepting Uncle Albert, that is, who was a fun, quirky guy, and whom I could picture immediately as soon as he was introduced. The scavenger hunt aspect of the story was quite humorous, and another is promised in the following book. I already have it earmarked

Review: K.J. and Becka are cousins who have only seen each other 3 times in their life because their mothers hate each other over a family secret that is bigger than either of the girls know about. They know part of the secret. The other half is revealed much later in the book. Anyways, their grandfather dies and leaves a bit of money split 4 ways, but the only way to get that money is to complete a list of tasks that the cousins must accomplish together without their mothers being involved.
This was a pretty good story of 2 young girls who hate each other, but wind up becoming friends by the end of the book even after they discover the "big secret". Grandpa's goal was to at least get the girls to be close since their mothers never would be. At first your sympathetic towards K.J., but as the story progresses, K.J does some shitty things to Becka and that sympathy sort of slides away. Both girls have been influenced by their mothers and that interferes quite a bit with their relationship.

Widow Bailey is on a private plane to Denver when it crashes in the rugged, snowy mountains of Idaho. Thankfully she and the pilot both survive. Though not an outdoors type she's resourceful and able to help unconcious pilot Cam, who has suffered a head wound. After they survive a cold and uncomfortable night, and Cam is back to conciousness, the questions begin. Who caused the crash? There are signs that something human did something, that it wasn't mechanical. Was it her lazy and threatening stepson? Could it be her vengeful and hateful stepdaughter? They are both grown and resent her for having been given control of their trusts by their late father.
This was a riveting read. While I'm not the biggest fan of survival plots, if it's done well it will snag my attention and hold it. I'm also not the biggest fan of the haters-to-lovers plot line, but it worked fine here. I got an inkling of the villain partway through so wasn't totally surprised when it was revealed. I'm looking forward to my next read by this long-time favorite author.

Review: Don't we all come across a book which we neither like or dislike? Well, Normal People is exactly that. The book is depressing; filled with sad, lonely & self sabotaging individuals. It made me compare my life patterns with the MCs. Made me question my choices. Isn't that what we look for in a book! A contemplation beyond our everyday thoughts.
A weird, quirky and too close to our sad reality, this book will stay in my head for a long time.

It's been a while since I visited with the Winchester Witches and though this one started a little slow, the majority of the story flew by quickly and pulled me in with it. There was some mystery with a strange curse and characters acting, well, out of character, we got to visit with some crossovber characterfs and we also got to meet some new characters who i am thinking may feature in subsequent books. Over all I enjoyed the mystery and the journey to the solution and look forward to continuing on with the series.

Review: While Lucy and Rafe are sitting next door having tea they witness a murder of an elderly man. But was this man the intended victim or did they waitress, who seemed to be horrible at her job, deliver the tea to the wrong man. Lucy and the band of vampire knitters try and discover who the killer is and if the tea was meant for someone else...dun..dun..dun.
Normally I hate cozy mysteries, but I have found one that seems to be tolerable and humorous. I mean who wouldn't want a band of vampires living in their shop basement that enjoy knitting and solving mysteries. It's a bit ridiculous and funny, but I think that is why I like it.

She doubts this, and embarks on a hunt for her through Belgium with her husband, Sidney, by her side. Though the war had ended, there was still residual danger afoot, and they find themselves dodging danger and enemies throughout their trip.
I was really pulled in by this story. I'm not normally a big fan of war, espionage, or hidden danger, but sometimes I'm hit by just the right book and find that I can't put it down. I already have the next one queued up, but will read it later in the year after taking a breath.

Review:If there ever was a book with an inception like concept, this is it.
A story within a story within a story! And an intelligent, intriguing style of writing.
I fell in love with the author and the chaos she caused.
Four aspiring writers happen to meet in a library. What connects them together is a scream.
Of a woman murdered in library.
Being writers, they start discussing theories & motives everyday.
Suddenly, one of them is attacked and the other one is stalked. The killer knows details which only the four of them can know. Was their meet a chanced encounter? Or a preplanned alibi for murder?
The above plot is a story manuscript written by an Australian author which she sends to a person named Leo who is her manager and her biggest fan. What we read are the replies from Leo at the end of every chapter. Until they start becoming intense and threatening.
Thriller within a thriller. Loved the concept.

Review: I got GoT vibes throughout the series. Brandon Sanderson has the magic of creating larger than life scenes so well that I couldn't focus on anything else from start till end of the book. The plot was mind-blowing. The twists had me screaming and cursing out loud in disbelief. Action is magnificently written. Incomparable.
The Well of Ascension is the second book of the Mistborn series. Though it is made for a make-believe world, I could relate it with everyday life. This book focuses mainly on political drama and is a little bit slow. The character arc is brilliant.
This book has become one of my favourite fantasy series.

Lord Hughes has other family and friends visiting, as well, and all is going swimmingly until someone dies under suspicious circumstances. Everyone at the manor is immediately considered a suspect, and Jane takes a turn investigating with the help of a recent and competent acquaintance.
This was a great second book in this series, with an exciting finale. The setting of a big country house post-WW I was perfect for this story, and all the characters were well fleshed out and easy to envision. Happily Jane, as the main character, was intelligent and not prone to stumbling about in her investigations, as sometimes amateur sleuths tend to be portrayed. I'm ready to get into the next installment, this time set on another one of my favorite venues, which is a cruise ship.
