I read a book in 2015. I do not remember the exact specifics of the book, but I do remember that it involves a guy developing portal abilities that he would use as a weapon by opening them in the space or path of things or people. I think the book started with him, developing the powers, and accidentally killing someone, subsequently that led to him being thrown into a jail or a compound on another planet/dimension. They embedded an explosive his neck that would explode if he tried to escape. They trained him how to fight with his power, and use it to deadly effect. He met a woman in the jail who is able to make things right, which she would use to disintegrate his explosive device, allowing them to escape together. I read the first two books, I think, but I do not remember if the author had a third in the trilogy, or if it was trilogy, or even a series. I read in high school and it’s been a long time, I’ve been trying to find the book ever since. I remember that it was a soft cover, around 400 pages, and that the cover art included a badass guy in soldier gear

At the beginning, is he a scientist, inventor, elite soldier, mage, etc.? Who does he work for?
