SOLVED. SciFi/ YA about a biologically enhanced human in a greater galactic empire. He is the last of his family line and they are the only humans with these enhancements. His family name is Dethlin/g or Deathlin/g or something very similar. [s]

I read this book in the mid-late 80's to early 90's. I don't remember much else about it except that his best friend/partner was either a woman or female of another race. I also believe he had to actually mentally trigger most his enhancements. Edit: I also think since he was the last of his line he was "The Deathlin/g"
