Thanks, Roger and Krissy, for rolling and reporting. Be back later with my book selection.

Roger and Krissy, we’ve been in challenges together but never the same team (unless you were on my hogwarts team—it was huge with little discussion).
Jackie, always nice to see you. 😉
I read mostly MM, lit fic, and thrillers, in that order. I’m a theatre professor in Illinois. I’m delighted to be here.

Message 51 has the current roll."
Do we read for spot or roll? Have I messed up already!??! And I was so excited to read the next Psycop.

Book: The Gladstone Bag
Author: Charlotte MacLeod
Pages: 236
How it fits: Kelling & Bittersohn #9
Date finished: 1/31/23
Rating: 4 stars
Review: This is a pleasant cozy mystery featuring Sarah's Aunt Emma. To help out a friend, Emma agrees to be hostess for a summer artist's retreat in Maine. As usual in a Charlotte MacLeod mystery, the cast of characters is a diverse group including a psychic as well as various artists. Instead of being the main characters, Max and Sarah are only available to help Emma by telephone. At the heart of the mystery is a lost treasure. Several people are attacked and a man is murdered. Emma has her hands full dealing with this group and finding the culprit.

Review: So far I have enjoyed everything I've read from this series. I thought I would be annoyed by Tyler and his insistence that he is straight. But seeing him thru Nick's eyes I found him in Nick's words like an over eager puppy. Just a little clueless and easily fixed with a nudge in the right direction. This story was a short and steamy bi-awakening friends to lovers and I loved every second of it.

Book: Agent Bayne by Jordan Castillo Price
Pages: 344
How it Fits: PsyCop #9
Date Finished: 1 February
Rating: ✷✷✷ (squeaked by)
Review: This one was less focused on Vic and Jacob (though it was still plenty smexy), but it does uncover more of Vic's backstory. Fine mystery, and it sets up a new direction for the series.
Easy to pick up,
hard to put down. I love Vic.
Grumpy-pants in love.

Reveiw: this is a second chance romance. That came about because the Characters of Auden and Carter matured in the relationship and looked beyond what they thought they knew and really listened to each others truth.

Krissy, I'm not going to try for that one. I'm reading for other challenges and think I'll need to use the alternate list at points for double-dipping. I do tentatively plan to work toward the 500+ and the 3 or more/complete series challenge, but will make that clear when I start on those.

That's great, Krissy. My book for this roll works for the 500+ page one.

Review: This ... did not work for me. I thought I might read this whole series during the challenge, but I'm done. James is always hit or miss with me, and this one felt like apologia for reducing the social safety net (I'm pretty lefty, and as a former Canadian, the attitude surprised me). Also, I profoundly didn't care.
Let's play poor, eh?

Review: Matthew and Miles are an alpha/omega couple, so in love. This is a love that logic would say is impossible since Miles was severely bullied and abused by his high school's football team. So severely that a broken rib punctured his lung and he flatlined twice in surgery. To make it worse the ringleader's father was Chief of police and covered it up so there was no justice. Matthew is a star football player on the college team. Miles is so strong that he becomes friends with the entire college football team. Two of whom are prelaw students who investigates the incident and gets justice for Miles.
How it Fits: using series #1 as Standalone this book is a standalone.

I am waiting for your review of The Wolf at the Door"
That series is brilliant!

Week 2, Roll 3, Spot 12

Book: Lady Midnight
Author: Cassandra Clare
Pages: 688
How it fits: The Dark Artifices #1
Date read: 2/3/23
Rating: 4 stars
Review: This is the first book in the Dark Artifices trilogy. Continuing five years after the conclusion of the first series, Mortal Instruments, this series centers around teenage Shadowhunters, Emma Carstairs and Julian Blackthorn. Emma is determined to find the people who killed her parents, and Julian is trying to be parent to all his younger brothers and sisters. They are coerced by the fae into investigating a series of murders. In return the faeries will return Julian's brother, Mark, who they kidnapped five years earlier. The story is interesting and there is a lot of action and bloodshed. The forbidden love theme is wearing a little thin but again it is the underlying theme throughout the book and I'm sure, through the rest of the trilogy. Overall, I enjoyed it and look forward to reading the rest of the series.

Review: I really enjoyed this book. I always enjoy a good mystery/crime book. Add in some shifters and I'm sold. This story was told entirely in Cooper's POV. I would have liked to have been in Oliver's head too but I didn't feel lost or anything without his thoughts. The author did well getting Oliver's feelings across. I liked that despite the fact Cooper was attacked and badly scarred due to a shifter attack but he didn't let that sour his opinion on the shifter community. He still understood that there are both good and bad of every species. So he held no prejudices.
This could have easily have been a 5 star if not for 2 things. One- I was not fond of the audiobook narrator. He never changed his tone or voice for each character so they all sounded the same. Two- there were too many "suspects" and I couldn't keep all the characters straight. I'm not a fan of having a ton of characters thrown at me. But i do look forward to book 2.
