[Subdue]The Hound of the Baskervilles, by Arthur Conan Doyle, 2-3 stars

I read a review last year in which someone described a plot element as similar to the Hound of the Baskervilles. I had no idea what she was referring to, so I figured it was time I read the story for myself. I’ve been slowly working my way through his books (in approximate order) and the first thing that jumped out at me is that he seems to value Watson more than he did in some other stories. But maybe not, because he doesn’t bother to tell him or anyone else what he’s planning. The plot has some nice turns, but there were too many outlandish elements to be satisfying. (view spoiler)[ if anyone has a really big dog, you’ll know that you can’t keep them a secret from your neighbors, especially when one neighbor spies on people with a telescope. They need to run around. (hide spoiler)] I really enjoyed the descriptions of the setting, the landscape, with the moors. It gave the story a strong sense of place.
