The Book That Wouldn't Burn (The Book That Wouldn't Burn #1)[May 15, 2023]

I am enjoying this one more tha..."I'm glad to see I'm not the only one feeling those parallels! Feeling like I like this a little more than Book of Ice so far, but no where near the others...
@Beena, re: Epigraphs--when I actually pay attention and try to remember the epigraphs, I can notice connections/foreshadowing... but they often aren't what it seems like on the first glance, or it might be just surface and the deeper meaning might be ignored... I think it'd be kinda fun to do more analysis on that, but I don't really care enough about the story to waste time on it. LOL
One example--Chapter 30's epigraph: (view spoiler)
I just read Chapter 43, and its epigraph was: (view spoiler)
Overall, I think the epigraphs are more pretentious than useful. LOL
Paula wrote: "until chapter 28. It's a very slow book, very different from Mark Lawrence other series. And I agree that Liviras POV chapters are mote engaging. [spoilers removed]"
I'm also finding Livira more engaging, but like Tammie, I can kind of take-it-or-leave it as a whole so far... it feels like it is reaching for big ideas but isn't quite enticing enough to make me want to spend time mulling over them...
In-universe or out-universe? More thoughts on Epigraphs (view spoiler)

Continuation of last comment, but with a quote from Chapter 43--(view spoiler)
Finished Chapter 43 and I have several thoughts... (view spoiler)Chapter 44 LOL quote: (view spoiler)
Chapter 46, earlier thoughts... (view spoiler)Chapter 48 (view spoiler)
HAH! Chapter 49--(view spoiler)
Grats on the finish Paula! Looking forward to your spoiler tag...I can see why you found the epigraphs annoying... lol. I definitely think they are a somewhat pretentious, rather than helpful, addon. (view spoiler)
I am decided I will sit here with a tub of ice cream until I finish the book, darnit.
Oh! I remembered my other "Livira, why don't you just..." thought: (view spoiler)
End of Chapter 51, more LOLs: (view spoiler)
I'm looking forward to your spoiler tag Milla! Almost there...Chapter 56 (view spoiler)
Chapter 57 (view spoiler)

Made it through 65!!--(view spoiler)
Finished! Finally! Enjoyed it--but some parts felt rather sloggy. Fun twists... but I saw most of them coming, if not from very far away. Still curious about several things... and hoping (view spoiler)
Yeah, I also think on a reread this will be much more interesting. And I think at least I have to reread before the next book comes out :D It's so hard for me to remember all those details. Which would be helpful to make all those connections! I even thought about making myself a map of all the chambers, maybe that would be handy xD I'm still not finished, but I'm sure today is the day.
I'm definitely looking forward to seeing how things develop in the next book(s), but I'm not rabid to get at them. I'm hoping book 2 is better... I liked the 2nd Book of the Ice better than the first, but haven't picked up #3 yet.

Of course! Welcome to the discussion. Some of us (me) are moving fairly slowly so wouldn't be hard to catch up

I'm ready this at a snail's pace, so you can certainly join and not feel like you're the only one still reading.

I'm still reading new comments!! ^_^ Join us join us!
Ah man, I'm still reading this very slowly as well, as you guys said, it did get a bit interesting at Chapter 23/24, but it's gone back to being a bit meh and a waiting game to see if anything catches my interest again. I dunno, I'm at 43% (can't remember the chapter) and just not feeling it. Bit apprehensive that it's gonna turn out like Red Sister for me again, really was not a fan of that.... :(

I had to put it aside for a while. I did like Red Sister, but so far I haven't liked anything else I've read by this author.
I've been on the fence about this book. Can you guys confirm this one is more like The Girl and the Mountain? I think that's the way your nonspoiler comments lean.
That's how it felt for me--more like Girl and the Mountain than Girl and the Stars (book 2 over book 1) at least as the amount of engagement involved, and the.... feel... of the secrets? Not at all like the Red Queen or Broken Empire series, maybe a little like Book of the Ancestor... it definitely feels like a Lawrence book.
I finished the other day. A common refrain for all of us seems to be "Sloggy, but had just enough to make me keep going to uncover the twists and turns to make it rewarding" I've only previously read Lawrence's Broken Empire Trilogy and strongly suspect I have skipped over his best work so I'll have to get back to that at some point. I think this one is to put in the "possibly better on the re-read" list.
@Tammie, I feel like if I put it aside now, I'll forget everything then have to start all over again lol, so will try to push through. His previous work has been a mixed bag for me:
Broken Empire Trilogy: Loved.
Red Queen's War Trilogy: Ok story, rated higher for humour and wit.
Red Sister (Book of the Ancestor Trilogy): Absolute slog, discontinued series.
One Word Kill (Impossible Times Trilogy): Ok story, rated higher for humour and enjoyment of writing, not sure if I'll continue.
Gunlaw (free short story on Wattpad): Loved.
Yet to read The Girl and the Stars, definitely prefer his Grimdark style more.
I finished today and yep Rob, this refrain is exactly how I felt reading. I also agree that this will probably be better on a re-read and that's what I definetely plan to do before the next book. I'm not even sure if I completely understood the ending. I only read the ancestor's trilogy before this and there I liked the characters more than in this book. But here the focus was probably more on the setting and the mysteries and twists.
Yeah, that settles it. This isn't something worth spending full price on. Too bad my library doesn't have the book. Nothing wrong with 3 star books - just my reading time has been lessened lately so I'm being pickier :) Thanks everyone for chiming in!
FINALLY finished this yesterday, I thought maybe the reveals at the end would make it a bit more interesting but it wasn't to be. It just really wasn't for me, didn't gel with the story at all. And I know most typical fantasy books are iterations of one another, with ideas borrowed/ taken and formed into another idea, but having read Strange the Dreamer earlier in the year and absolutely loving it, this seemed rather similar in the bones of the concept, but just not as good. He's also borrowed a lot of ideas from his other works, and it made it a bit samey to me.(view spoiler)
The romance really didn't work for me either, I wasn't feeling it at all. (view spoiler)
Just bummed that I found it pretty meh all round, I've seen loads of people giving it 5 stars and I'm just like ??? Sad times. At least it's over and I gave it a try.
Beena, I feel everything you said there. I also was reminded of strange the dreamer. And I also didn't like the romance in here (view spoiler)I also didn't like the writing style. It didn't felt lyrical for me, rather overly constructed. And I would have liked more school setting.
All in all I also feel disappointed. I had high expectations because of the Ancestors trilogie and because of the high ratings. But as it was mentioned already, I have hopes that this book is much better on a reread, so I didn't give up yet :D Next time I think I'll try audio.
@Milla, well, glad I'm not the only one! Re romance (view spoiler)
Re writing style, also agreed. I've previously said before that I always enjoy his writing even if I'm not into the story, and it looks like I'm going to have to go back on that here. 100% felt overly constructed too, and dare-I-say-it, but like he's trying too hard.
I've just concluded that I only really love his grimdark stories, his other forays outside of it have not been my jam at all.
Fair enough that you haven't given up, however, this is definitely where I'll be leaving this series.
Yeah... definitely not up to his best work... a bar shy of middle... still hopeful sequel will be better.
Trudging along and haven't touched it in awhile...I think I'm all the way up to 30%If this was an author I wasn't already a fan of I would have dnf'd it by now

I agree that the siblings seems like all the knowledge of the book left no room in their heads to grow. And there was even a line that Livira even wondered if reading that many books makes was harmful to her because it takes something out of her or something like that (hide spoiler)]
