No, I'm afraid that's not it. The siblings are the same age, they are the ones who are ill-behaved, and the lion is the positive force in the story. Thank you for the suggestion!
Lion on the LooseReminds me of a German childrens book series which I think was originally published in the 1950s/60s. The main characters are two siblings (boy and girl) who go on adventures with a Lion that escaped from the Zoo. I don't think the kids were unruly though. Apparently the first book was translated to English: Lion on the Loose

The illustrations make me think of Pierre by Maurice Sendak, though there's only one boy. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/6...I had it in a box set with Alligators All Around who were quite unruly! Pierre just said ' I don't care' .

The lion is intimidating and the children begin behaving, and by the end of the book, they're happy to be behaved, and also I think the lion is their friend. Something like that.
-I read this when I was a younger child, so it would have had to have been published prior to 2000, possibly prior to the 90s. My mom was born in 66 and I was able to read some of her books (Nancy Drew, Hardy Boys), so it's even possible that the book is older, but I don't get the vibe that it's that old. If I had to guess, it was most likely published between 1980 and 1995.
-I remember that the art had an overall blue wash; the lines were I THINK in dark blue or black, and the dominant color for fill-in was blue, in a couple different shades. Possible one shade, it's tough to conjure.
