This is the third book in the series and picks up where the first book ended but with different characters. It is set on the Asteria, which is part of the Exodus Fleet. It chronicles the lives of some of the shipmates and their families. A visiting Harmagian scholar is reporting on the lives of the Exodans for other species to learn their way of life. Sawyer leaves his home on Mushtullo to join the fleet for a new adventure. Eyas, a caretaker, provides funeral services and composting of the bodies, is feeling unsettled. She had always wanted to be a caretaker and is unsure of what is wrong. Tess is losing her job to AI and is considering leaving the Fleet for a colony. Kip is counting the days until he turns twenty and can get off the ship. Each person will make the decision to stay or go, some may even come back. I really wish the author would leave out the references to eating bugs, it makes me shudder every time. Ew!
