Worlds Collide question

Spoiler Alert: So, Rook did what he thought was right to protect his father and fellow civilians. Alex dumps Rook. Rook continues to protect Alex. Rook goes to help Alex and gets shot! I think Rook deserved better, and even though I understand Alex's decision to dump him in a previous book, he definitely deserved better in the sense that he didn't deserve to be shot through the heart! Just my opinion, what's yours?
