wosedwew | 411 comments Here is a newish book with that beginning.

The Matchmaker of Pemberley: An Amorous Sequel to All Jane Austen's Novels.

I just finished this one, or I probably would not have remembered the miscarriage. It isn't the main focus of the story.

abmom | 152 comments Do you remember a book in which Elizabeth accompanies Lydia to Brighton and gets taken along with her by Wickham to London and sold to a brothel?

Patricia | 39 comments wosedwew thank you that's the book!

I remembered reading the preview and she was going on a trip to bath

Linda | 223 comments I read something a while ago where Darcy writes Elizabeth a letter, mostly to understand his feelings. But a new maid is cleaning his study and mails the letter. I can't remember if this is before or after Hunsford.

I know this is late late late, but I just finished listening to Yours Forevermore, Darcy; by KaraLynne Mackrory and that exact scenario happened. Love all her stories.

Rose Fairbanks' book is great too.

Marlee Joy (marleejoyhawkins) | 71 comments I am trying to remember the books where Elizabeth and Darcy are stuck in an inn soon after Hunsford. In one of them Elizabeth sleeps in a closet. In another they stay at someone's cottage. Unless it is the same one or maybe it wasn't after Hunsford. Is this a common trope or did I somehow slip into a niche years ago?

I have just been searching Amazon for two hours and I might have rifled through some people's well-organized and highly descriptive bookshelves. I have only found one by S. Neha.

Are there more? Did I dream them up? I started searching because I had a story idea and then wondered if I had read it. Now after the search I forgot the idea but obviously it had to do with an inn after Hunsford. It seemed like I read a few like that. And now I want to find them.

For the first one are you thinking of Speechless: A snowbound with Mr Darcy Pride & Prejudice Variation? I haven't read it in a while, but I recall that Darcy is kicked in the throat by a horse and Elizabeth stays to take care of him - there was no room in the inn so she stayed in the dressing room or closet ...

Yes! but I kept skimming over it because I assumed the snowstorm would be before Hunsford.

Is that an example of an ARC? I had to look up what that was. If it wasn't on KU I probably hadn't read it.

message 175: by Marlee (new)

Marlee Joy (marleejoyhawkins) | 71 comments Thank you for your help.

There are many books where they are confined before Hunsford but there is another dynamic that appeals to me when they are forced to be together immediately after Hunsford. If my idea comes back I will post the premise here and you can tell me if it is on my mind because I already read it :)

Is this an ARC? I had to look up what that meant. I probably haven't read it if it wasn't on KU. I did not know about the fanfic sites until I joined goodreads less than a year ago.

Thank you for all these suggestions. I think I read and enjoyed most of them. The confined together trope is obviously a favorite of mine. I thought there were more that happened just after Hunsford. Writerly Ambitions was also a lovely story.

It is really nice to have a community of other JAFF readers. I have been on an island (metaphorically speaking) for years I knew there were others out in a nebulous somewhere but there was no one around me.

Yes! I clicked on it and after you had mentioned ARCs I wondered if I could use it as an example of one. I may perhaps attempt to be more professional with a second book. My trouble is I despise formality. I cannot reconcile my preference for Regency era literature with my personality. I would scream if I had to live guided by those societal norms. Perhaps it is Jane Austen's own irreverence that appeals to me. Like Caroline Bingley I find resumes and bios and formal emails all 'odious' and I wish they fell to someone else's lot.

Please do not misunderstand my ramblings as any sort of request. I am not asking you to provide an example. I am avoiding other work.

Thank you for sharing it with me I will give it a read.

message 181: by Katja (new)

Katja | 439 comments Yeah I reckon it would count as piracy if anyone posted an ARC online, generally you have to promise not to share.

For the most part ARCs are just like the eventual published book or receive minor edits before publication. Although I recall one book that got a major rewrite to fix plotholes based on Arc feedback

Kim (allthelovelypages) | 6 comments I’m searching for the book where Elizabeth shows up at Pemberley and is engaged to Darcy’s younger brother. They are not in love but there was some sort of compromise that led to their engagement. Darcy and his brother are somewhat estranged. That’s all I remember. Does this ring a bell for anyone?

Sam H. | 828 comments I recall reading a snippet of a book, not sure it has even been published yet, but I don't recall who the author is:

It is night time, Darcy is out near a ruin by himself, Elizabeth had gone out by herself as well to walk and was nearby. Somehow they speak with each other around the corner of the archaeological ruin, no introductions, but she offers him comfort.

That is all I remember. Ring a bell?

This does seem familiar but I can't place it.
I want to say "Fallen" but that is not a ruin, only caves.

J. W. Garrett (jeannewallacegarrett) | 600 comments I remember that scene as well. Did they discuss mythology and she called him Mr. Cyclops? Seems like I remember she had a name for him since they decided to not be introduced. He was concerned about his sister and she gave him good advise from a female perspective that helped him.

Carole (in Canada) (caroleincanada) | 3 comments I'm thinking that I it was an excerpt that was posted on Austen Variations but it was a church ruin maybe? Anngela Schroeder may have been the possible author? It was a WIP at the time, and she gave Darcy advice on how to handle a sister. I don't remember the Cyclops part but it may be the same one that Jeanne is referring to.

J. W. Garrett (jeannewallacegarrett) | 600 comments That's the one I was talking about. I made notes: back on June 2022

The Greatest Risk

https://austenvariations.com/the-grea...

Elizabeth was on a trip with her aunt and uncle Gardiner and their horse had thrown a shoe and her young cousins had become ill in the carriage. They had stopped to rest for the night. Uncle told her to go for a walk but to stay close to the inn.
Darcy and Elizabeth meet in the ruins of the abbey. They don’t tell their names. He is Cyclops and she is Polyphemus. Darcy was amazed to learn of a woman who could site the Odyssey. She gives him advice that soothes his soul regarding his sister and they separate thinking to never see each other again.
