Reed Gradke | 2 comments A couple of years ago (2015-2018) my dad checked out a book for me from our library. I remember i wasnt too interested in it at the time but now i really want to read it. I think I read the first book or part of it. from what I remember it was about a kid on another planet who's father dies. he then tries to go back to his village but realises he has time-traveling powers. he first finds this out when hes traveling by a waterfall (perhaps by bridge i dont remember) and he realises he can slow down his perception of time. when he does this he sees faint images of people who traveled here in the past. he tries to kill one od the images to save one of his friends but fails and unintentionally starts a folktale where a traveler fought off a "demon". after that my memory of the plot is very shaky so i wont go into detail, but i do remember that this world was divided into a bunch of different sectors with invisible walls that make people depressed when they get too near. i also remember that his father was a machine called an expendable. that segues to the other perspective. in the other perspective, an astronaut and an expendable are traveling to a planet that could support life with quantum space travel. i dont remember much other than stasis was a thing. i dont know if this is sufficient but if anyone has any ideas please help.

Ann | 166 comments This sounds a lot like Pathfinder by Orson Scott Card. I definitely remember the part where he tries to save the friend and it gets distorted by the townspeople.

A review on GoodReads described the plot as: "Pathfinder is a science fiction novel by American author Orson Scott Card.

The novel tells the story of Rigg and his unusual ability to perceive the "paths" of living things throughout time. It is the first book in the completed Pathfinder series, and is followed by Ruins and Visitors.

People from Earth have colonized a new planet, giving it the name "Garden".

This is accomplished with the assistance of human-like machines known as expendables.

A select few of the colonists have gained unusual abilities, such as the ability to slow down time or the ability to jump forward into time.

The narrative focuses on a boy named Rigg who has the ability to see the paths traveled in the past by any being, living or dead.
