Anita Pomerantz | 9298 comments Thank you to everyone who submitted their favorite reads of the year. This year, it took 8 votes (the same as last year) to make the top slot.

We actually have a top 9 this year. Those titles with 3 votes all tied for the 10th spot, so I'm going to list those as Honorable Mentions. There were a lot of those!

But we did have a definitive winner for the year, and that book was:

1. Lessons in Chemistry

Tied for second place are:

2 - 3. Project Hail Mary (2nd year in a row it has taken the #2 slot).
The Lincoln Highway

Standing alone in 4th place is:

4. The Colony

Taking up the remaining slots (5-9) are:

Horse
Klara and the Sun
The Dutch House**
Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow
True Biz

Honorable Mention (or Tied for 10th Place)

A Gentleman in Moscow
A Master of Djinn
Anxious People
Being Mortal: Medicine and What Matters in the End
Book Lovers
Born a Crime: Stories From a South African Childhood
Braiding Sweetgrass
Carrie Soto Is Back
Deacon King Kong
Glory
Ordinary Grace
Persuasion
Plain Song
Remarkably Bright Creatures
The Rose Code
The Diamond Eye
The Guncle
The House in the Cerulean Sea
The Maid
The Sentence
The Winners
These Precious Days: Essays

**This is the fourth year in a row that The Dutch House has made our list.

Nicole R (drnicoler) | 8088 comments My absolute favorite Top 10 list of the year! Thank you so much for pulling it together!

Now I am off to see what else I can add to my TBR...

message 3: by John (new)

John Warner (jwarner6comcastnet) | 102 comments I have read eight of them.

message 4: by Rachel N. (new)

Rachel N. | 2249 comments Great list. I have four of the top 9 on my tbr list. Of the honorable mentions I've read 6 and have six on my tbr.

message 5: by Anita (new)

Anita Pomerantz | 9298 comments I've read 5 of the top 9, but sadly didn't care for two of those. I do want to read Horse and Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow for sure.

I've only read 5 of the Honorable Mentions. It will be 6 after this month as one of them is for my face to face book club.

message 6: by Jgrace (last edited Jan 04, 2023 05:31PM) (new)

Jgrace | 3953 comments I've read 5 from the top 9 and 7 of our honorable mentions. I'm guessing that some of these will return at the end of this year.

message 7: by Theresa (new)

Theresa | 15650 comments Great list!

I have read 3 of the top 9 and have 4 in my TBR.

I have read 5 of the honorable mentions, and have 3 in my TBR

That might be my highest overlap since I joined!

message 8: by Booknblues (new)

Booknblues | 12143 comments I've read 5 in the top 9 and 6 in the honorable mentions.

I have a few on my tbr and others on my radar.

message 9: by Robin P (new)

Robin P | 5797 comments I've only read 3 of the top ten but was already planning to read 4 more of them this year. I"ve read 9 of the honorable mentions.

message 10: by Nicole D. (new)

Nicole D. | 1573 comments Can we pick from this list for the Candles challenge?

message 11: by Nicole D. (new)

Nicole D. | 1573 comments Question about Lessons in Chemistry .... Is the cover representative of the book? Because at first glance, that does not seem like a book for me. But the description sounds intriguing.
Is it chick lit?

message 12: by Jen K (new)

Jen K | 3155 comments I've read 7 of the top 9 and have the remaining 2 on hold at the library. For the honorable mentions, I've read 11 with a few others on my TBR and one that I own and should read soon.

Agree that it is a great list!

message 13: by Nicole R (new)

Nicole R (drnicoler) | 8088 comments Nikki D, I do not think the cover matches the book at all. Horrible marketing, honestly.

The book is fairly serious, about a female scientist in the…1960s? So deals with sex discrimination in the workplace a lot and gender roles. Not super heavy, but does have very serious themes.

message 14: by Olivermagnus (new)

Olivermagnus (lynda11282) | 4821 comments I have read four of the Top 9 and five of the honorable mentions, but have ten others on my giant TBR. I'm looking forward to reading them.

Yes, for Candle #4 I believe . . .it's a top 10 list, and you may use it.

Definitely not chick lit. And it is funny so you might enjoy the wit. But I was not a fan overall so you can read my review for the one and only counter opinion. All my friends in my face to face book club LOVED it.

message 17: by Amy (new)

Amy | 12953 comments I liked Lessons in Chemistry. I probably gave it around four stars. Its funny - when I came down to it, it just didn't compare to others that I knew would be top ten. I also read it earlier in the year.

message 18: by annapi (last edited Jan 04, 2023 11:26AM) (new)

annapi | 5505 comments Wow, I've only read two - Project Hail Mary and Klara and the Sun, both in previous years. But several are already on my TBR and I will be adding others.

message 19: by Book Concierge (new)

Book Concierge (tessabookconcierge) | 8439 comments I've read 3 of the top 9 and 10 of the "honorable mentions." I have quite a few of the others on my massive tbr.

I was thinking the same thing as Nicole D - the cover does not appeal to me at all, so thanks for the additional info. I may give it a try.

I've read 21 of these and enjoyed almost all of them. It's a great list.

message 22: by Sue (new)

Sue | 2733 comments I always look forward to the PBT Top Ten! Best Top Ten list out there every single year.

message 23: by Amy (new)

Amy | 12953 comments One interesting thing about Lessons in Chemistry, is that the character is quirky and spectrumy - today we would completely understand this. But back then, there was no compartment for this. Folks did not know how to understand or perceive this and she had that mountain to climb on top of all the others. She was just different in every way and had to carve her own path. I remember writing that if she were around then doing what she was doing, feminism would have moved a lot quicker.

message 24: by Phair (new)

Phair (sphair) | 55 comments Guess I’m an outlier in my reading tastes. I’ve only read one of the Honorable Mentions (Remarkably Bright Creatures ) and none of the top 9. Don’t even have any of the others on my want to read lists.

message 25: by LibraryCin (last edited Jan 04, 2023 06:52PM) (new)

LibraryCin | 11722 comments Now I don't remember if I've shelved the honourable mentions along with the top ones. I'll double check before I do the shelving...

Anyway, no surprise that none of mine are there. One of my lowest rated of the year is one of the honourable mentions ("A Gentleman in Moscow").

Of the top 9, I have currently read one "The Dutch House"; I believe I have "The Colony" on my tbr. And "Klara and the Sun". Happy to see I've at least read a few (6) of the honourable mentions.

ETA: My mistake - It is a different "The Colony" that is on my tbr.

message 26: by LibraryCin (last edited Jan 04, 2023 06:53PM) (new)

LibraryCin | 11722 comments Am I correct that only 3 of the top 9 were part of the Who's PBT's Favourite author challenge? (I thought it might actually be higher, if nothing else, than because so many people were reading those authors!)

message 27: by Linda C (new)

Linda C (libladynylindac) | 1793 comments I have read 3 of the top 9 and have 2 on my TBR.

I have read 9 of the honorable mentions, and have 3 on my TBR

Looks like lots of good stuff to add to my pile

One of my talks is on Maria Mitchell who discovered a comet in the 19th century. Part of it is talking about the roles of women in science. Early in that century, it was considered ok for women to study "natural sciences" as a way of appreciating God's creation. But as science became more respected and codified, men took over. After the talk, I asked people about their experiences in the sciences. Women described insulting and discriminatory experiences from the 1960's all the way up to the present. Less obvious today but still can be an issue.

Same as you Phair, the only one I read was Horse and have no desire to read any of the others. This is pretty common for me, I read outside the box (mine and everyone elses-LoL)

It's actually very unusual for me to have read as many has I have and also have more on my TBR. These lists are often mostly recent literary fiction -- I tend to read older books and a lot of genre fiction that don't make these year top 10 lists.

I always say that new books have to 'mature' a bit before I get to them -- except for a long awaited genre series book sometimes.

punxsygal | 307 comments Three of the top nine for me and five of the honorable mentions.

message 32: by [deleted user] (new)

I haven't read any of the top 9, but have read 4 of the honourable mentions.

However, I want to read 5 of the top 9 and 6 of the honourable mentions!

NancyJ (nancyjjj) | 11107 comments Great list! I’ve read 5 of the top 9, and 10 of the honorable mentions. I have many on my tbr and 5 on deck waiting.

I’m glad True Biz made the list. It deserves some attention.

Yes you’re right. I spotted 8 on the honorable mention list, so that’s pretty strong.

The top 9, or the whole list with the honorable mentions too?

message 36: by Karin (new)

Karin | 9248 comments I've read six of the honourable mentions, but only 4 of the top 9, but that's because I couldn't get Lessons in Chemistry in time to read it in 2022. The Dutch House was one of my top 10 picks in a previous year.

Good catch! I didn't check those!

Heather Reads Books (gothicgunslinger) | 862 comments Fascinating list! I haven't read many of these, but I am glad Klara and the Sun made it. It's definitely one of the best ones I read last year.

There are so many fabulous choices for this candle!

message 41: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 173 comments Such a fun list! Typically I only have 2 or 3 favorites. This helps me read more fantastic books and not waste time on those that are only on a list because of hype. Thanks.

message 42: by LibraryCin (new)

LibraryCin | 11722 comments Shelving (finally!) done!

And this is - by far - the biggest number of books added to our top 10 for the year (due to the ties) at 31!

https://www.goodreads.com/group/books...

(Our highest before that was 21 in 2010.)
