Book about a boy and a bird?

I’m looking for a book I read as a child about a boy on some sort of journey with a small bird. I believe there was a treasure in a field and the bird appeared in the corner of a soccer goal.. it’s possible it had a religious theme. I would have read it in the early 2000s.
