Read about 1970-1972. An orphan inherits his uncle’s thoroughbred farm. To save the farm the boy and his best friend (other boys from the orphanage come to help) train and race a gray and a black horse respectively. The farm was named Oak Tree or oak Hill Farm I think and the horses were all named after different kinds of oaks. I’ve been looking fruitlessly for years.

Definitely Run Fast, Run Far by Logan Forster, his only stand alone work of fiction. Unfortunately not the easiest book to source, but worth the hunt!
