Let's Chat - 2023/2024
@LTJ: Creepshow was an absolute staple in my childhood. I remember watching it with my dad, practically on repeat, when I was 5-8 years old (probably a big reason why I love thriller and horror novels now LOL!). I may have to give Shudder a try! I had never heard of it before.Gem, I’m on board with you. I’ve recently ended my relationship with Netflix too - it seems everything on there now is a Netflix original, not a lot of classics to choose from anymore. :(
@Gem: Ah, I see. Yeah, LoL I've been debating it for a few months now since honestly, I'd rather read and game. I love horror but yeah, I'd rather read horror/watch the bigger horror movies as I'm not into TV shows really.Yeah, it's crazy about Stephen King and why a lot of readers won't read his non-horror books like Billy Summers or Fairy Tale. He's obviously an amazing author but I get it, LoL people don't want to take the risk of being awake all night long in case he shows them why he's the king of horror ;-)
LTJ wrote: "@Aoife: That's so awesome and duly noted, thank you for the insight! LoL see, a milkshake TENDS to mess up my stomach as I did that one time and definitely regretted it after having lots of hard li..."A lot of people would be in the same boat but I love dairy too much lol that does sound like a bad combo especially mixing beer and spirits.
They used to here anyway they were SO good I wish they came back :( hopefully they make a reappearance soon. I usually tend to go with mccrispy myself lol
Girlfriend pints are a godsend but people usually hate you for ordering it lol Bailey's hot chocolate is much better than any Irish coffee, it's so much cosier to have. Honestly Ireland has decent food! We can do certain things pretty well
@Aoife: LoL yes, bad combo indeed I've only ever done it twice and will never do it again!Nice choice with the McCrispy as well! I also wouldn't mind a Big Mac.
LOL got it, I won't order a Girlfriend Pint unless I literally know the bartender or something. I've ALWAYS loved fish and chips with a Guinness, I once had it in an authentic Irish Pub in Maine and it rocked. I can only imagine how amazing it would be in Ireland :-)
Twice is maybe one to many there :P I kinda want a McDonads now I won't lie
If you make friends with them and ask they might be easier to convince to do it. Guinness doesn't travel great so it tastes a little different here (and Nigeria! It's usually one of the top consumption per capita) so it's always funny getting a pint here with tourists. You should have Guinness stew if you can it works really well with beef or lamb!
@Aoife: LOL indeed about that, to be fair, I haven't done that in well over 10 years so yeah, lesson learned.LoL McDonald's is my guilty pleasure once every 2 or 3 weeks give or take. Oh I believe it about Guinness, that's why I love it. It's such a strong beer and tends to be everywhere, just like Heineken and Jack Daniel's. LoL I always try not to be fancy or whatever with special beers, crafted beers, etc.
I had a Guinness beef stew once, ZOMG it was amazing!!!
LTJ wrote: "@Gem: Ah, I see. Yeah, LoL I've been debating it for a few months now since honestly, I'd rather read and game. I love horror but yeah, I'd rather read horror/watch the bigger horror movies as I'm ..."
I read Fairy Tale and LOVED it! I wouldn't classify that as horror at all.🤷♀️ At some point I want to read it again.
I read Fairy Tale and LOVED it! I wouldn't classify that as horror at all.🤷♀️ At some point I want to read it again.
@Gem: YES! LoL yeah, some people won't touch Fairy Tale because they think it's a horror fairy tale and it totally isn't. LoL awe well and yeah, it's definitely re-read worthy as I'm glad you loved it as much as I did :-)
@Cujo: I've never read The Talisman yet but Fairy Tale is 100% a fantasy with a few SK twists for those that are Constant Readers. LoL I'll leave it at that so I don't ruin anything for anyone :-)
LTJ, That's probably for the best :P stick to the after drink snacks that work Ohh fair that's me and this little bakery up the road from me. They do the best cakes and stuff but everything is so sweet (not an issue for me lol). It's so worth it tho. Yeah I'd say Jack is pretty common here but most would go with Jameson's and ginger if you're getting whisky. Gin is huge here and there's loads of small batch stuff now so it's all over. Heineken is everywhere but Guinness made a new lager called rockshore so that's not popping up everywhere since Guinness/Diageo are such a power. It's actually pretty nice tho! They make a cider version that's really easy to drink.
Would highly recommend trying it with lamb if you eat it/find it. Slow cooked lamb is great and it's a really good combo with Guinness
@Aoife: LoL oh yes! Snacks work well for sure, great tip :-DOhhhhhhhhh, I love Jameson too! Same with Jager shots, always fun and being a huge metalhead, a huge part of going to concerts. LoL many memories for me with Jager and Jagerbombs!
Oh wow, I've never heard about Rockshore until now, thanks for your insight on it. Now I have to try it whenever I find it!
I love lamb, especially here in NY since gyros are so huge, lamb gyro is my absolute favorite when it comes to Greek food, especially from the food trucks and all :-)
Lamb? Guinness? I'M SOLD!
Jager itself isn't too bad but I cannot to jagerbombs I don't know why but when I mix red bull with alcohol I will immediately feel awful and want to go home lol but I agree it's linked to a lotIt's pretty good (coming from someone who really only drinks spirits!)
I'm really picky with meat in general and it's really easy to cook lamb badly so I'm always wary ordering it places.
That does seem like a huge thing in the US! Food trucks aren't as common here (they're around but usually it's like burgers and chips at festivals or outside stadiums), they're getting more common in Dublin in areas
@Aoife: LoL oh yes, it's definitely an acquired taste, that's for sure. Jagerbombs are no joke, after a second and third one, you will absolutely feel it \m/I'm so glad to hear that as it's been duly noted and hopefully one day, I will speak of my experience trying it out for the first time!
That's so very true, I go steak above anything else but also love chicken, fish, seafood, sushi, and lamb :-)
Ah, I see, yeah, food trucks are everywhere, especially in NY! All sorts of different options, drinks, breakfast, lunch, etc. I particularly love the Greek food trucks for gyros and shishkebabs!
I would go crazy if I ever saw an Irish fish-n-chips food truck!!!
Oh I don't think I could handle 3 of them ahaha I would be asleep. I find the same with tequila, I like it but others despise it with a passion Hopefully you do! I have no idea if it's outside of Ireland actually but fingers crossed you can find a glass somewhere :)
I would go chicken over everything but it's the easiest to not ruin :P
That would be really handy, you could try so many different foods really easily. We have a few popping up not nowhere the same variety. There's literally a place that the whole draw is that there's 5 food trucks in it. They all do great food (the Japanese and Mexican ones in particular are FAB) but the whole novelty is the fact they're food trucks. They get more business when there's a few in the same spot too.
Now see those we have and if you're ever at a game (GAA, rugby, probably everything else too) you'll find them lol
We have a couple of weekly events in my town that are just food trucks coming to sell food. I used to go to one that was fairly close to me, but it shut down. The other one is way across town on a weeknight, so I'm usually too lazy to go.
@Aoife: LoL you know, I'm not a fan of tequila, it just doesn't do anything for me if that makes sense.LoL this is true about chicken and can't ever go wrong with it. I love buffalo wings, beer, and french fries. It's simple yet effective :-)
That's so awesome as that's also very popular here in NY, especially over weekends! It's a smart business idea since everyone will try a bit of something, get drinks, and just create a nice atmosphere.
YES!!!
@Mark: That's so awesome! Ah, damn, sorry to hear the one closest to you closed and the other one is far. I know where I used to live there would always be at least one food truck on the weekends, mostly for the breakfast/lunch crowd. Some incredible coffee and breakfast sandwiches but since I moved in 2018, none are where I live now. D'oh!
Mark wrote: "We have a couple of weekly events in my town that are just food trucks coming to sell food. I used to go to one that was fairly close to me, but it shut down. The other one is way across town on a ..."this would be me lol I would have to plan to get to them not just rock up to them

I get ya! I just actually like the taste of it and like making cocktails with it
Wings are such a good food. Not sure you've ever heard of Hot Ones? It's a youtube interview thing but they use hot sauces and they get progressively hotter as you go on. I really want to try the sauces but I can't get them to Ireland :( or the shipping is like wayyy more than the sauces themselves
Yeah it just makes everything easier if you're in one mood but other people want something different it's handy like! It's right by a canal so in the summer it's packed always a great vibe around
@Aoife: Oh yes, for sure, if it's in a mixed drink, I don't mind. LoL just not a fan of straight Tequila shots!LoL I've heard of Hot Ones... WAY too hot for me. I prefer mild hot and other unique sauces/rubs. Stuff like garlic parmesan, mango habanero, and even regular buffalo sauce are my favs :-)
Oh wow, I believe it about pricing with shipping and handling. That can definitely add up!
LoL hell yeah about what they call here "food truck courts" where it's like 3-8 different trucks and there are always places to sit, eat, drink, and chat. It's nice :-D
Not a lot of people enjoy straight tequila I think it's very much a required taste I love a mango habanero but an odd hot sauce really adds something! I love it when they taste amazing and hot. Yeah shipping to Ireland is expensive lol it does make supporting Irish businesses easier :P
@Aoife: Yeah, for sure, it's just not for me. I prefer shots of 151, Jager, or even Jameson.LoL I don't mind mild but anything that's too hot just messes me up! That's very true about supporting Irish businesses instead of having to import everything, I love that!
You should try a baby Guinness shot! It's tia maria and bailey's on top to make it look like Guinness, they taste really goodI blame my uncle he got me into spicy food when I was younger lol there's a good few Irish brands coming up in the last few years so it's made it so much easier. Yeah much handier to not import so much stuff, shipping doesn't end up costing more than the item itself
@Aoife: LoL I've never had a Baby Guinness shot and will 100% get one in the future for sure! LoL ah, I see, I got into spicy food thanks to being friends with people from India, Bangladesh, and just my love of sports. Sports fans LOVE spicy food, especially chicken wings, my favorite to eat while watching football :-D
Would really recommend them honestly just a nice mix togetherChicken wings are always something good but they aren't super common for games here i don't think? Maybe it's just where I head to lol
I LOVE Indian food! One of my best friends from college moved to Ireland when he was 14, and used to host dinner nights to introduce us to different areas foods. He's a great chef so it was always fun. My uncle's partner is Chinese too so she makes some dishes I wouldn't have seen in a restaurant.
@Aoife: Sweet! LoL oh yes, I love chicken wings, but I'm curious, what is most popular during sporting events/games? Fish and chips? Chips? Burger sliders? I'd love to know :-DOh yes, Indian food is amazing as wow, that's so cool about your friend from college! I also love Chinese food, it's a staple here in New York... Chinese takeout rocks!
@Abby: Sorry I missed your response as I read it wrong and thought it was just for Gem! I'm so glad you also loved and grew up with Creepshow! It was that, Tales From the Crypt, Goosebumps, and IT that all had a hand in making me love horror :-DYeah, a lot of my friends speak highly of Shudder, especially how they rebooted Creepshow and made it into a new series and everything. I might just cancel Netflix one of these days and jump into that but I do get a GREAT horror fix from reading, more than horror movies/TV shows these days, you know?
@LTJ: No worries at all! I just finished The Deep by Nick Cutter and loved it! I gave that classic horror feel that I absolutely love. It was the first Novel I have read by him, and have definitely bumped The Troop towards the top of my TBR! I had no idea they rebooted Creepshow! I will have to check it out. I 100% am a fan of the classic horror movie as opposed to newer releases though. It seems everything that comes out now is just a bunch of jump scares and overdone CGI. I can rewatch The Birds, Psycho, Jaws, even The Blob and love them every single time. I just appreciate how they are able to achieve the spook with limited resources; I love the craft of the classic films. It’s just hard to find them available on streaming services nowadays.
@Abby: Ohhhhhhhhh, that's so awesome! I've only read The Troop by him and loved it but do have The Deep on my TBR. One of these days I'll get to it as I heard it was awesome and you just confirmed it! LOL it's funny how we read the book the other hasn't :-POh yes, they turned Creepshow into a TV series exclusively on Shudder, I believe they're 3 seasons in. My manager says I'd absolutely love it as it's fantastic (he also loves horror/grew up on Creepshow). Yeah, I saw those two Terrifier movies... eh. The gore was crazy and over the top but the second one was so confusing and left much to the imagination. The aesthetic of seeing gruesome deaths wears off quickly. Reminds me of the SAW movies. They should have stopped after the third one and kept it as an incredible trilogy. Then they became just which traps were better than in the previous movies.
As I always say, simple is best. The last good movie I loved was Malignant! It was unique, refreshing, and had several crazy plot twists. What about you?
I'd say burgers and chips? The games here (that I go to at least) aren't as long I don't think as a lot of American sports so honestly I rarely eat at the games themselves but I would get chips sometimes. There's just a decent bit of drinking lol Yeah it was great! Made the weeks more fun when you could finish up with really good food. Chinese food is really popular here too there's always some diferent dishes in some so it's usually really fun to try :)
Just posted a review for this amazing work. What a terrific job! For mystery fans indeed! https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/5...
@Aoife: Ah, I see, that makes sense! LoL yeah, I love an ice-cold beer with appetizers for sure since they're quick, easy to eat, and get the job done :-)That's so awesome about how Chinese food is so popular in your neck of the woods! What's your favorite dish?
Saw this thread and wanted to get in on it! I know New Year's was 3 weeks ago but I binged Stranger Things 4 over the holidays. Anyone else here a fan?
@Noel: Hell yeah! I love Stranger Things, I wish we didn't have to wait so long for the next season :-)
LTJ wrote: "@Aoife: Ah, I see, that makes sense! LoL yeah, I love an ice-cold beer with appetizers for sure since they're quick, easy to eat, and get the job done :-)That's so awesome about how Chinese food ..."
Beer and stout are always the go-to for games! Rugby and gaelic football are less than 2 hours games (80 mins and 70 mins so less than 100 mins total with the break) and I would usually plan to eat after not during so I could get some fancy food in :P
I'm not sure it's technically a traditional dish but my uncle's wife is Chinese and makes a chili-honey sauce that's really amazing. She uses it for different meats or veggies (I can't eat pork, for some reason it's a migraine trigger for me randomly so she'd make chicken or veg versions of foods for me). She does make her own sweet & sour sauce too and my little cousins can handle that so it appears a lot now too
@Aoife: YES! I love that as yeah, that makes sense to me. I love appetizers during the game and then saving room for an actual meal later on at night. Chili-honey sauce sounds awesome and ah, I see, migraine triggers are no good. That only happens to me with my allergies/sinuses as it's crazy! I usually have to be in complete darkness like Batman and sleep it off for a few hours until it goes away. Not even meds help!
I love sweet and sour sauce with sweet and sour pork or chicken, it's delicious! She sounds so awesome :-D
Yeah it's just easier to have a meal after the game unless it's pretty late at night. I move around too much to be eating while watching i'd end up spilling whatever food all over myself and the floor lol It's SO good. Today was actually Chinese New Year so I'm just home from celebrating with her! There's a few shops in my town that sell snacks etc from China, and they make some more traditional foods so it's great fun.
Migraines are the bane of my existence I won't lie. I'll go 3 months without one then get one for about 4 days but I don't change my diet enough to pinpoint what could have set it off. I don't even have proper allergies!! 100% with you on thr batman cave, dark room, no electronics or anything plugged in cause even those sounds are like nails on a chalk board to me. I can't take a lot of pain killers (weird blood thing, can't have any blood thinners) so it's plain paracetamol and sleeping with an ice pack wrapped on my head.
She is! I've known for most of my life at this point and she's always been wonderful
@Aoife: Oh for sure and yeah, LoL all about portioning it out so when you eventually go home, you're not dying.I'm so glad to hear that and Happy Lunar New Year! That sounds like a nice day with snacks and traditional Chinese food, hope you had a blast :-)
Damn, I'm sorry to hear that. Do you take any medicine or maybe went to a doctor for a prescription or something? Mine are seasonal allergies that get annoying in the Fall and Spring. LoL you know the pain then as I have to do all that except for the sound part. Anything bright, even my cell phone or Kindle, becomes unbearable.
Hell yeah about your Aunt :-D
It was a lot of fun!! It's great especially now the oldest is 8 and starting to understand things a bit more. He gets a lot more of the difference now and likes getting to talk about having 2 cultures lol it's really cute!!Yeah I got some meds for it but they make me feel really loopy so not great if I'm in work. I usually have a lucozade sport and an apple and can power through for a little while. Oof I'd say they're a pain! The only thing I can offer is to have honey from your area - advice that always works for me in fairness! Oh yeah I can't have anything around me lol

Ease dropping on your conservation :) my sister has had migraines all her life. She tried phenobarbital which worked for a while but then stopped working. She then started seeing a kinesiologist, not sure if she still is, but the last time she mentioned it the treatments were working for her. Hope you can find some relief.

@Aoife: Awe, that's so awesome! Hell yeah, I love that. That's a big reason why I love NY so much, it's a melting pot of culture, such a beautiful thing :-)Damn, I'm sorry to hear that, I love the advice Sheri gave above as that's something that sounds like it could help as well! LoL as for me, only sleep/Ibuprofen does the trick. I also know sometimes caffeine helps so either a quick cup of coffee or a soda can alleviate some of the pain I get with sinus migraines but to be fair, I only get the REALLY bad ones 2-3 times a year tops. LoL what sucks is they're random!
I heard about honey as well, good call. LoL I need to try that next time, thanks for the tip :-D
LTJ wrote: "@Noel: Hell yeah! I love Stranger Things, I wish we didn't have to wait so long for the next season :-)"omg man, I'm such a complete geek, over-the-top about this show. It's completely off the rails. Last time I was so excited about a movie or show was Star Wars.
btw, did you know most of the actors are also practicing musicians? Joe Keery has albums under the moniker Djo and he's damn good.

I got my daith pierced to help (meant to be a pressure point) and it did actually help for a while with them. I found I have to have a silver piece in, I got a black ring to replace the bar and they came back within like a week. I had gone 5 months without any before!!

Yeah seems NY would be great for that!! Must be fun :D
Lol thank you but sure look what can anyone do? Hopefully something works aha
Yeah coffee works for a lot of people but I can't force myself to drink it no matter what lol. Ugh they're worse when you have no warning at all
it's a well known thing around me and I've always lived by it :D

@Noel: Hell yeah, same here! I felt the exact same way, it's a perfect show. Incredible story, characters, a killer soundtrack, and just a complete package of a show.Wow, I never knew that most of them were practicing musicians! Now I have to go check that out, thanks for this info, my friend :-)
@Aoife: Oh yes, I love the city that never sleeps!LoL exactly, this is why I always take things one day at a time and hope for the best. I also absolutely hate when they come out of nowhere. I worry it'll hit one morning when I have 5 or more meetings with presentations I need to do and my head is killing me. LoL luckily, that hasn't happened as I always take Ibuprofen the night before :-)
Bees for the win!!!

Wow, I never knew McDonald's had curly fries! I love their double quarter pounders with cheese :-D
LoL great to know about a Girlfriend Pint, LoL I usually get the regular size and while eating, can do like 2 or 3 tops. I had Irish coffee and an authentic Irish breakfast many moons ago and it rocked, LoL especially the spiked coffee!
