I would, too, Barbara. I sometimes buy the premade ones and add a few things to them like sliced cucumbers, frozen pre-blanched edamame, or even sliced tomatoes, but those premade things don't last long in the refrigerator. I always end up throwing a lot away, and with the cost of food now, I don't like to throw anything away. The only thing I've found that lasts a long time in the refrigerator are the shredded carrots I add to green salads. The carrots seem to last close to forever.

Since salads don't show up magically, and the pre-made ones don't last, I sometimes end up with a honey bun. I know that's awful, and I do feel guilty when I eat one, but I blame the salads. If they'd stay fresh longer, I might not have to resort to honey buns. LOL

I found putting a paper towel in the salad greens helps to keep them fresh.

If you mean the salad mixes that come in the plastic containers. Put a paper towel on top and store them in the refrigerator upside down. It keeps them fresher.

I also do this for romaine lettuce that comes 3 in a pack. I either wrap each romaine in paper towel individually and put them back in the bag or put a paper towel inside each side of the bag.

I've also kept celery wrapped in a paper towel then back in the bag to keep it fresher. If I feel I can't finish the celery before it starts to wilt, I cut it up and freeze it for soups.

I always try to add beans to my salads as I don't eat a lot of meat. It also makes the salad more filling. Sometimes I'll also add rice, quinoa or other grain to make it more filling.

Thank you, Alias. I tried the damp paper towel, but it didn't work for me. I just have to eat salads as fast as possible when I get them. LOL I've kind of resigned myself to green smoothies for my greens, with added fiber for my fiber. When I do have salads, I add things to them, too. I'm a pescatarian (salmon and whitefish only in the seafood category) and I'll sometimes add salmon to salads as well as English cucumbers, etc. I do add protein powder to my green smoothies since I don't eat any meat other than salmon or whitefish.

I add a lot of things to fruit smoothies, nuts and and seeds mostly. I don't eat a lot, and I can't imagine how people get all they need every day. It seems to me like people would have to be eating all the time to do it. The only way I can do it is to add to smoothies, but even then, I don't feel I get everything I need.

I do eat beans at least twice a week for the protein. I also make chili with plant-based ground beef. I love chili with beans and sharp cheddar cheese. I'm not vegan, so I will eat dairy and dairy products.

Thank you. I just bought some salad things today. I will try the dry paper towel.

madrano | 23987 comments The humidity of your refrigerator makes a big difference in how long produce lasts, too. We buy the 3 heads of romaine at once and have watched different 'fridges treat them differently over the moves. I like the idea of a paper towel on a pre-made salad, turned upside down. Good tip.

I like to munch of my celery, so i wash & trim it, then keep in a jar with water in the machine. Works for me.

As for carrots, i suspect some will outlive us all. Although we had one refrigerator that shriveled them in a week! What the heck?

Alias Reader (aliasreader) | 29692 comments I thought this YouTuber had some really good vegan recipes. I go more for vegetarian meals but these would be very easy to adapt.

Her meal prep for the week video was terrific.

I didn't know about the humidity of the refrigerator. I'll have to check that.

About the carrots: LOL I think you're right, though.

Great idea to have these meals ready to go. I was unaware that there is now an "Impossible Sausage". I'll have to check that out. Thanks, Alias.

Bella (Kiki) (coloraturabella) | 5515 comments It was a year in July since my gallbladder demanded to be set free, and I had surgery to remove it. I still feel the pain of a bile stone slipping through my bile duct into my intestine at times. I've tried taking ox bile, but that made me sick. I didn't mind that it was bile from an ox, it upset my stomach. So, I've been making smoothies of bitter greens for lunch, and that helps a lot. Ox bile or bitter greens daily will keep the gallbladder healthy. Wish I'd known that long ago before mine got sick. :-(

I love green salads, but not bitter greens. However, I'll tolerate it. If any of you have ever had a stone get stuck in your bile duct, you can relate to the pain level. They gave me Fentanyl in the hospital. In an IV. Took about three seconds and all the pain was gone. Strangely, I got no "high" from the Fentanyl, and I didn't want one. I do not like altered states of reality.

I often get my green smoothies from Frozen Garden. They have a great selection, and all the ingredients are in there. All I have to do is open the bag and put the stuff in my smoothie maker. I also use Fruniti, which is a liquid I get from Amazon. The advantage with Frozen Garden is I also get fiber, and I don't have to add fiber like I do with the Fruniti. I'd rather have fresh salads, but though I'm better at keeping the veggies fresh, they do still have a pretty short shelf life in the refrigerator, even the cucumbers, and I hate all the prep work so I get the premade. Still. Prepping is way too much like cooking for me.

madrano | 23987 comments Thank you for this info, Kiki. My daughter, which i mentioned elsewhere is with us until the end of the year, has a smoothie of her own concoction daily. Those greens, while so very healthy, are hard to drink down on a daily basis for me.

Your last sentence says it all about fresh food prep. I want & love it but my knives never seem as sharp as they should be!

Frozen Garden and Fruniti have been lifesavers for me, especially since my family acts like greens are cyanide capsules. I put protein powder, flax meal, and seeds, etc., in my green smoothies. They'll eat fresh fruit, but vegetables, no way. Not unless under duress.

Daniel Jackman | 3 comments Getting more veggies into my diet is a work in progress for me too. I try to make salads when I can, but honestly, sometimes I skip going to the store and the greens go bad before I use them. So I try to keep frozen spinach or kale around to throw into soups or omelets. Smoothies help a lot too, especially on busy days.

Alias Reader (aliasreader) | 29692 comments It sounds like you are doing well, Daniel. Frozen veggies are a big help. I throw frozen kale or spinach in my smoothies.

I do try to eat a daily salad for lunch or dinner. If veggies are not being used up quickly enough I make a pot of veggie soup.

Smoothies are a terrific use of frozen vegetables and fruit. Sometimes we have to huddle, too, before our greens go bad. Worth it, tho!
