Wow. You really are reading some great, classic short stories. Since first reading this one, I've thought of it as early magic realism, before there was a name for magic realism..."

I know some of us in the Short Story Club Group think of it as a kind of Twilight Zone story. It's hard to know what was real and what he was imagining. I'm not sure it was magic.

The group is reading the stories that are in a big compendium of short stories. Have a look, Randy! We get links to all the stories online, too.

PattyMacDotComma | 920 comments SMUT. Yes, really. That's what the title means (among other things). Shmutz by Felicia Berliner, is the unusual story of a porn-addicted teen. Not a boy, but a sheltered Jewish girl from an ultra-conservative Hasidic family in New York. I loved it!

Historical mystery set in a monastery in England in 1537. Very fine mystery/history lesson with some, for me, issues. A great many characters are Brother ........ which is confusing and WARNING the book contains a good many detailed descriptions of death, torture, and what is to our eyes the absolutely horrifying standard of living of the poor. Reminded me of "The Name of the Rose" which I liked a lot better. I liked the book but I wasn't enthused. 3 stars.

A Ponzi scheme is at the heart of this novel in which a young woman gets involved with a crooked billionaire who goes to prison. There's a touch of magical realism as the culprit is haunted by ghosts of his victims.

Barbara | 1 comments Finished Death at the Alma Mater. A group of rich alumnae are invited to a weekend at a financially struggling college at Cambridge. Somebody gets killed.
It's the kind of mystery I usually like - people thrown together or stranded. Very Agatha Christie. But this was not only underwhelming but something about the writing and characters came off like it was from the Golden Age, though it was published in 2010. Just seemed dated.

James Best (jamesbest) | 299 comments Now starting THE BIG BUNDLE by Max Allan Collins, the 22nd book in his ongoing series featuring old school private eye Nate Heller.

The series, with eighteen novels and four collections of novellas/short stories, has been going strong for forty years now.

This is one of the most enjoyable mystery series in my permanent library, and I hope Mr. Collins has plenty more Heller stories up his sleeve.
