It's 1915 and Jack McColl, a Scottish car salesman and wanna-be spy is sent by British intelligence to China, Mexico and the US in search of German spies and saboteurs. This is the first of a 4 part series and I loved it -- great plot, characters and period detail. 5 stars, highly recommended.

In this book - which is darkly funny - Pulitzer Prize winner Whitehead immerses us in the ambiance of Harlem in the 1970s. The book revolves around Ray Carney, a furniture store owner and fencer of stolen goods who strives to be upwardly mobile.
