Araych | 677 comments Beat the Devils Beat the Devils (Morris Baker, #1) by Josh Weiss by Josh Weiss

A thriller, not a mystery. Takes place in an alternate Los Angeles in 1958. Joseph McCarthy is President and anti-Semitism is everywhere. Jewish LAPD detective Morris Baker is called to the scene of a double murder. As he investigates the case he meets Russian spies, secret police, Humphrey Bogart, Werner Von Braun, Edward R. Morrow and many others. Very interesting idea for a novel but not written at a very high level. This is Weiss' first book; I'm sure the next will be better. I'm thinking we'll see more of Detective Baker.

James Best (jamesbest) | 299 comments Now starting THE NEVER GAME (2019) by Jeffery Deaver, the first novel in his Colter Shaw mystery/thriller series.

I read Deaver's 2004 stand alone novel GARDEN OF BEASTS earlier this year and really liked it. So I thought I would try out his newest series and see how it stacked up.

RJ - Slayer of Trolls (hawk5391yahoocom) Sad news: Cormac McCarthy passed away earlier this week. I consider him one of my favorite authors even though I have read only three of his books. Blood Meridian, or, the Evening Redness in the West and The Road are two of my all-time favorites.

That was sad news, for sure. I love his writing, most especially Blood Meridian, from which, by the way, someone has decided to try to make a film. I don't know how that would work, but the book was beyond excellent; definitely NOT for the fainthearted.

Araych | 677 comments Seduction of the Innocent Seduction of the Innocent (Jack & Maggie Starr #3) by Max Allan Collins by Max Allan Collins

Jack and Maggie Starr #3. Fascinating murder mystery set in the world of comic book publishing in New York, 1954. I'm a big fan of Collins' work -- always impeccably researched and well written, but very accessible. Highly recommended, 4 stars.

The "movie" has been in development for years. Ridley Scott was attached to it for a while as I recall. I can see it getting made although I have no idea what kind of audience it would draw. Paul Thomas Anderson would be a great pick to get it done, if he could make it as good as There Will Be Blood. Maybe Daniel Day-Lewis as The Judge...?

Everything I'd read about this film says that McCarthy was going to write the screenplay, but obviously now they'll have to find someone else.
