Beat the Devils
by Josh WeissA thriller, not a mystery. Takes place in an alternate Los Angeles in 1958. Joseph McCarthy is President and anti-Semitism is everywhere. Jewish LAPD detective Morris Baker is called to the scene of a double murder. As he investigates the case he meets Russian spies, secret police, Humphrey Bogart, Werner Von Braun, Edward R. Morrow and many others. Very interesting idea for a novel but not written at a very high level. This is Weiss' first book; I'm sure the next will be better. I'm thinking we'll see more of Detective Baker.
Trust

Now starting THE NEVER GAME (2019) by Jeffery Deaver, the first novel in his Colter Shaw mystery/thriller series.I read Deaver's 2004 stand alone novel GARDEN OF BEASTS earlier this year and really liked it. So I thought I would try out his newest series and see how it stacked up.

The Voice to Parliament Handbook: All the Detail You Need
by Aussie authors Thomas Mayo and Kerry O'Brien is an excellent, easy-to-read summary of Aboriginal and colonial history as well as a discussion about the upcoming Constitutional referendum.Absolutely wonderful! If you're an Aussie, don't miss it.
5★ Notes from me about The Voice to Parliament Handbook with some excerpts
I love seeing little kids dress up and pretend. Princess Kevin by Michaël Escoffier is a cute story about a little boy going to fancy dress day at school. Go, Kevin!

The Deadly Mystery of the Missing Diamonds
was a mindless piece of fluff. My three star review:https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Sad news: Cormac McCarthy passed away earlier this week. I consider him one of my favorite authors even though I have read only three of his books. Blood Meridian, or, the Evening Redness in the West and The Road are two of my all-time favorites.
Here is my review of Book 13 in the Harry Hole Scandi-crime series:Killing Moon by Jo Nesbø

That was sad news, for sure. I love his writing, most especially Blood Meridian, from which, by the way, someone has decided to try to make a film. I don't know how that would work, but the book was beyond excellent; definitely NOT for the fainthearted.

Seduction of the Innocent
by Max Allan CollinsJack and Maggie Starr #3. Fascinating murder mystery set in the world of comic book publishing in New York, 1954. I'm a big fan of Collins' work -- always impeccably researched and well written, but very accessible. Highly recommended, 4 stars.

I don't know how that would work, but the book was beyond excellent; definitely NOT for the fainthearted."The "movie" has been in development for years. Ridley Scott was attached to it for a while as I recall. I can see it getting made although I have no idea what kind of audience it would draw. Paul Thomas Anderson would be a great pick to get it done, if he could make it as good as There Will Be Blood. Maybe Daniel Day-Lewis as The Judge...?

To Catch a Storm
didn’t work for me. It required too big a suspension of belief. My three star review:https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

Everything I'd read about this film says that McCarthy was going to write the screenplay, but obviously now they'll have to find someone else.

Whoever plays the Judge might want to come equipped with a full-time therapist.
