I weakened and started a new (to me) series. (What was I thinking?!) Of course, I enjoyed Martin Walker's French village, so I expect to be squeezing in another visit to Bruno, Chief of Police again before too long.
4.5★ My review of Bruno, Chief of Police

The Woman Inside
by M.T. EdvardssonThe story, set in Sweden, revolves around the death of a wealthy couple in their luxurious house. Various people in the couple's orbit come to the attention of the police.
Good suspense story. 3.5 stars

Fixit
is a worthy addition to the IQ series. My four star review:https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Swamp Story
by Dave BarrySemi-amusing story about several fools caught up in several varieties of idiocy in the Everglades. In the past I have found Barry a very funny guy but this effort is a disappointment. When rich stupid people do stupid stuff it's funny. When poor stupid people do stupid stuff it's pathetic. Not recommended, 2 stars. Read Carl Hiaasen instead.
If you like noir and can handle supernatural characters, try,

I read The Stars Are Fire / Anita Shreve. I have mixed feelings ... October 1947, the fires in Maine caused the loss of everything they owned. The cruelty exhibited by Gene towards Grace was not deserved. She did not cause his disfigurement and had nothing to do with his true love turning him down after the war.
Now starting FIXIT by Joe Ide, the sixth novel in his ongoing series featuring amateur private eye Isaiah Quintabe. The first book in the series (IQ) was one of the best debut mystery novels I had ever read. The follow on novels have been anywhere from solid reads to very good, but none have quite matched the sizzle of the first novel... We will see how this new one stacks up.

I just finished Fixit and enjoyed it. Not as strong as the first in the series, which I loved.

I'm from Maine and the fire of '47 is still talked about.
Independence Square
by Martin Cruz SmithIn this book in the 'Arkady Renko' series, set in the summer of 2021, the Russian police detective searches for the missing daughter of a gangster.
Timely story, set when Russia is about to invade Ukraine. 3.5 stars

Well, I've started reading Midnight at Malabar House by Vaseem Khan for the group read and I've just posted about another book I read a while back, a two-volume-in-one sort of thing from Stark House, Death of a Stray Cat / An Affair of the Heart. The first of those, Death of a Stray Cat (1955) is just super good mystery reading, a whodunit where I had no idea of the who and was a bit gobsmacked at the reveal.

Is it better than Mexican Gothic? I wasn't a huge fan of that one.

I gave both 4 stars; Mexican Gothic's mix of fairy tale and weird tale appealed to me. The setting -- Mexico City -- is pretty well used, and there's a greater variety of characters. The central story probably has some similarities, but I thought her delineation of differences between vampires clans -- she taps into several cultures' vampires -- was well done.

I don't really enjoy vampire novels that much any more. I think I can count on one hand how many I actually own.

It might not be for you, then, and especially since you weren't enthused by your last try with Moreno-Garcia.
Just read Matt Phillips's CountdownGood noir yarn from an author I like, fairly bleak and not to everyone's taste maybe but if you like noir this is a good one.

Hi, everyone. I'm currently reading "The Iron Vow," by Julie Kagawa and a collection of poems and short stories written by Edgar Allan Poe. Julie Kagawa is my all time favorite fantasy author, and probably my favorite author in general too, and she helped introduce me to the fantasy genre. I highly recommend her "iron fey" book series.
Once We Were Home

Finished Midnight at Malabar House by Vaseem Khan, which I thought was a pretty good read -- very well and intelligently written. I actually find it sort of sad when there's a good book for the group read and then only a couple of people read it. Would have made for a great discussion (and also a good miniseries).

The Rush, by Aussie author Michelle Prak, is a scary outback, backpacker thriller! Storm, blackout, body lying at the side of the road in torrential downpour ... do you stop or get the heck out of there?
