I'm about to finish Hungry Ghosts by Kevin Jared Hosein. It's set in Trinidad, one of my happy spaces.

Stewart Hoag #3. Light, fun mystery set in the world of New York writers and publishing. Perfect for a book to read by the pool. 3 stars.

Liz | 1194 comments Every Man a King Every Man a King (King Oliver #2) by Walter Mosley is definitely more thriller than mystery. My 3.5 star review:

RJ - Slayer of Trolls (hawk5391yahoocom) Randy wrote: "I just finished The Ballad of Black Tom, too, and agree with your assessment. LaValle takes dross and if he doesn't exactly spin it into gold, he makes it a better thread. (And he doesn't stretch his analogies past the breaking point.)"

Thanks, and very well said. I didn't dislike it, I was just sort of hoping it would be...something more?

RJ - Slayer of Trolls (hawk5391yahoocom) Nancy wrote: "Re the writing: that's what I love about it. She is amazing and it kills me that her books are being taken out of libraries. Gah!"

She was unbelievably talented. Any community that would allow her books to be removed from their library doesn't deserve to read her. (Yeah, I know it's never really that simple....)

Yeah, I've heard those "(City Name) Noir" collections are uneven in quality. That's too bad; it's such a good idea.

I, the Aboriginal, an autobiography, kind of ghostwritten by Douglas Lockwood, has fascinated me for decades. Aussies, especially, should learn our shared history.

Araych | 676 comments Thunder Moon Thunder Moon (A Judd Wheeler Mystery) by Richard Helms by Richard Helms

Judd Wheeler #2. Police procedural set in small-town Prosperity, North Carolina. Wheeler is the Chief of Police and certainly has his hands full what with a biker gang war, a serial killer, a paroled sex offender showing up in town, missing girls and a murdered football player. Busy days, right? More plot than characterization but the book is very well done. I found it exciting and suspenseful. Book is recommended to others, 4 stars.

James Best (jamesbest) | 299 comments Now starting INDEPENDENCE SQUARE by Martin Cruz Smith. This is his latest hardcover release (and tenth novel overall) featuring Moscow homicide investigator Arkady Renko, who made his debut way back in 1981's GORKY PARK.

Smith was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease way back in 1995 but kept it hidden from his editors and publishers for many years. I hope he continues to crank out the Renko books as his health will allow.

Barbara (cinnabarb) | 9973 comments Sing Her Down Sing Her Down by Ivy Pochoda by Ivy Pochoda

In this novel, author Ivy Pochoda explores violence in women, and through the lives and actions of her characters, speculates about what made them vicious. Is violence an innate characteristic? Or does it stem from poverty, harassment, molestation, injustice, brutality, and the like.

Compelling story. 4 stars
