Brett Bosley | 329 comments Hell Hawks!: The Untold Story of the American Fliers Who Savaged Hitler's Wehrmacht, Robert F. Dorr & Thomas D. Jones. Pretty self explanatory, it's about a fighter bomber unit. Pretty gruesome.

Tome Addiction | 6 comments I just started the Epic "The Way of Kings" by Sanderson.

Yup, I'm over 100 pages in and it has fully entrapped me. Now will the pace and engagement keep steady for me to complete?

I recently completed "The Dragon and the George" by Dickson an enjoyable fantasy romp.

Other books this year:

"A Boy and His Dog and the End of the World"
"Acid for the Children" Flea (non-fantasy but surprisingly excellent.
"The Last Days of John Lennon" - I know not fantasy but if you are a Beatles fan a must-read.
"Kindred" - Hugo Award Winner - I love the time travel mechanism the author uses. Less historical fiction and more survival when you think about it.

Ellen | 852 comments Just finished Sinopticon: A Celebration of Chinese Science Fiction. A solid set of stories. My favorite was Flowers of the Other Shore. It's a different take on a zombie story told from the zombie's point of view.

I liked that one, and you're welcome! The Wars of Light and Shadow is her best series. That starts with The Curse of the Mistwraith. If you find that one you might want to snag it!

Woman Reading (is away exploring) | 75 comments Magic Bites (Kate Daniels, #1) by Ilona Andrews Magic Bites

After reading the second installment of Kate Daniels: The Wilmington Years, I just had to do a re-read of the series. I found this audiobook version for Kate Daniels #1 made by Graphic Audio which uses a full cast to "perform" / read the book and includes sound effects.

Michelle (michellehartline) | 3168 comments I'm reading an historical fiction book about the Second Macedonian War by Ben Kane called Clash of Empires. It's very good!

I'm also reading through the new Tuyo World Companion at the same time, and that's fun. Lore about the different peoples, maps, etc.

Leonie (leonierogers) | 1221 comments I've just read Fourth Wing, and while I can understand why it's doing very well, it was at most a 3 star for me. Got the giggles intermittently during some of the rather...interminable...descriptions of...well, let's just say the adolescent mind would probably enjoy them, but I really drew the line at (view spoiler)

message 1165: by Marc (new)

Marc Towersap (marct22) | 340 comments Finished Rebecca Roanhorse's Fevered Star. it is the 2nd book in her series. Black Sun is book one, and should be read first, Fevered Star references several incidents that occurred in Black Sun. It is a bit different, names are not English, but once you get used to it, you'll find it's an interesting story!

Anyhoo, now reading NK Jemison's The City We Became.

I know, right? Hence the spoiler tag 😂

Oh, and that was one of the more mild descriptions, I might add. But definitely giggle worthy.

message 1176: by Kaia (new)

Kaia | 660 comments I just finished Lex Talionis by RSA Garcia. It is a mix of science fiction and mystery, and I found it really engrossing until the end… which I’ll just say was unsatisfying to me. I’m not sad I read it, though.

I also recently read Little Eyes by Samantha Schweblin which was a very interesting look at the impacts of a new technology around the world, while also being a interesting look at humanity in general. It was a little more grim that I wanted it to be, but that was okay and felt fitting. You follow multiple story lines, some throughout the the book and some for only one chapter.

Still making my way through Saga by Brian K Vaughan. Now on Saga, Volume 7. I’m also about halfway though A Tale for the Time Being by Ruth Ozeki, which is on my TBR Challenge. It’s not really fantasy, though it has some fantastical elements. I’m still not sure what I think of it.

I’m also a member of the Black Sun / Fevered Star fan club - can’t wait for the third book to come out!

message 1179: by Colin (new)

Colin (colinalexander) | 366 comments Finished The Half Life of Valery K by Natasha Pulley The Half Life of Valery Kby Natasha Pulley. Valery is a radiation biologist, imprisoned in the gulag, who is taken from his prison camp in Siberia and sent to work in the secret City 40 as a scientist to assist with studies on the effects of radiation. There is obvious radiation throughout the area and what Valery is told about it and about the purpose of the research doesn't match what he finds. Naturally. The author's spare, forceful prose builds the picture of broken people trying to work amid horrifying twists in an insane situation. It is a compelling read. There were some points in the description of the medical side of it that didn't work and I found distracting and the motivations behind some characters' actions seemed a stretch, but this is still a really good read.

But . . . is this really hard science fiction or is this historical fiction? In fact, something very big, very bad, and extremely radioactive (think Chernobyl level) did happen in this place. The setting and the background are all real. Definitely read the author's note at the end. Information can also be found in references, e.g. Ecocide in the USSR: Health And Nature Under Siege (see pp 174-175) and online, although I am careful about internet material on topics like this. Pulley is clear in her note that only the characters and the specific research are fictional. So, I go with historical fiction, which only makes it more horrifying. Very much worth reading.

Here I am on a real computer reading posts and lo, and behold, your post contains more than just "Finished"! On the app, if I go back to the list of notifications and click on it again, then I can see the cover image and click on it to see what you read, but I had no idea you actually wrote anything after that.

I hate to ask, but I would really like to read your posts more regularly. Could you not use the cover image in your post or leave it till the end?

That book sounds very interesting.

Thanks! It's merely an app problem, and as much as I know the app sucks, I still use it 80% of the time.

message 1188: by Michelle (new)

message 1190: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) | 1894 comments I can't use the app - it makes me crazy. I don't even use mobile view on the browser. I just use regular desktop view on my phone. Which makes me super annoyed whenever I have to go to a book page on my phone because it's ONLY mobile view - and then it changes the layout of everything. Search, notifications, etc.

Goodreads always gotta be improving everything. >_>

message 1191: by Anna (last edited Aug 29, 2023 12:59PM) (new)

Anna (vegfic) | 10434 comments I get the normal desktop book page on my phone/ipad? Everything works exactly like on a computer. (Which is why I keep harping on about not understanding why people use the app instead of that.)

message 1192: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) | 1894 comments It's the same one as on desktop. The desktop one is just "optimized" for mobile now. When I'm on my phone, the layout of the headers changes though. Like I don't have separate icons for notifications, group discussions, inbox, etc. It's just all contained in a single icon with my avatar, which I can click to open up. Search isn't a box that I can just type in, it's a magnifying glass icon I have to click on to open the search box.

I just find it super annoying. Anyway - I didn't mean to derail this thread with that, I just get triggered by the terrible app and how bad it is at actually allowing people to use this site in a functional way. LOL

message 1193: by Anna (new)

Anna (vegfic) | 10434 comments Oh, you mean the search on the book page, got it! I avoid the book page anyway so I would never use anything on that page :D I thought you meant it switches you to the mobile version, which would be horrible!

message 1194: by Becky (last edited Aug 29, 2023 01:28PM) (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) | 1894 comments I try to as much as possible! But sometimes I'm out in the world and need my phone to look up and add books to GR, and it is SO annoying now. :(

Edit to add: this is only really annoying when searching multiple books in a row. Either you have to go back to a non-bookpage page, or use the stupid icon to open the search and THEN search, because that's WAY more efficient. GAH!

message 1195: by DivaDiane (new)

DivaDiane SM | 3676 comments Yes, well, my phone is tiny and I'm old. I only use the web version on my phone when it's urgent. Otherwise, notifications work so much better on the app, actually. Plus, if it's a simple text based post and text based response, it's so much easier.

message 1197: by Becky (new)

That's legit! I totally understand ^^ But places like Amazon only notice dollars, so if we want this website to work we gotta find a way to get attention.

Otherwise, please remember we have a Discord server and are preparing for LibraryThing and TheStoryGraph should those be more amenable to us all :D
