I lived in Bergamo Alta, and I can attest, it's gorgeous. I still prefer Lago di Como, though.

John R So many of us are lucky/blessed to live in lovely parts of our various countries, so as we (in Scotland at least!) approach the start of a new week, a traditional Celtic blessing on you all -

May the road rise up to meet you.
May the wind be always at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face;
the rains fall soft upon your fields and until we meet again,
may God hold you in the palm of His hand.

JenniferAustin (austinrh) | 22 comments I live in Austin. It's a lovely place. We are just north of the 30 degrees north latitude line, which also runs near Cairo, Egypt, and we are indeed right at the edge of the American desert. It's dry but beautiful. We have had a drought this year, and when it finally rained after a brutally hot summer, the sage bushes bloomed a day later, and looked like lavender flame.

Many amazing writers hail from Texas -- Larry McMurtry, Cormac McCarthy, Ethan Hawke, and Katherine Anne Porter, for a start. The best Texas writer you might not know is Joe R. Lansdale. He hasn't been writing long enough to be a classic yet, but he will be. (If curious, check out The Thicket, The Edge of Dark Water, or The Bottoms.)

John R Glasgow, Scotland (where I live) is on the same latitude as Moscow, Russia....which is very apt as at the moment here it feels absolutely Baltic!

Good Morning Hannah and welcome to the group.

Yes, we do have a variety of countries represented and they help us with learning and loving new authors from their country.

I hope you enjoy!

Jen R. (rosetung) | 398 comments I’m an American living on a German island in the Baltic Sea.
I’ve lived many places before this so it’s fun to see I have a past home in common with many of you.
I was born in upstate NY, grew up mostly in Tampa, FL, college in small town PA, a year of college in Glasgow, Scotland, then many years in SF Bay Area, then a year in New Orleans (the year after Katrina), a bit of time in a suburb of Austin, TX, and then about a decade in Brooklyn, NY. Then I moved here to Fehmarn in the middle of the pandemic in 2020. My husband is German and changed careers which brought us here.
Rosemarie, how’s your deutsch? ;)

Hehe, yes I'm feeling too old for my former nomadic ways. It's cool though to have experienced so many cool places as a resident.

Yes, Blueberry, bay area! I had especially great time living in the avenues and in an artist warehouse in Fruitvale :)

Rosemarie, cool, your german is surely better than mine! Oof, is it hard. I love learning languages but people speak so fast I can't understand much...

Wow--more than me! I was born in Canada on the west coast, we spent a year in Germany when I was 3 (I remember), back to Canada, moved to CA twice (San Francisco, but the first time, which was 2 years, we also spent six months in a different town) while I was growing up, also during my growing up time I spent a semester in Saskatchewan. As an adult I've lived in Ontario (London twice as well a s Nepean and Ottawao), Kansas, Ohio and several towns in Massachusetts. I didn't live in a house for more than 3 years in a row until I was over 40. Mostly 1 and 2 years.

Mark Twain, John Steinbeck, and Brett Harte are all very familiar names where I live.

I enjoy traveling though, and this thread is making me itch to start wandering around more!

Sounds like a lovely place to grow up.
My Sister and her husband bought a camper van late summer and started traveling out west and tried to hit all the National Parks. They loved the northern part of California. Well pretty much anywhere they went was a great adventure for them.

Did they visit any of the Redwood forests? They're mostly in State Parks, not National. I highly recommend Calaveras Big Trees. That's where I was married (literally on the South Grove trail!)

Is that where the General Sherman tree is? They looked like a catapiller next to the tree!

message 75: by ForestGardenGal (new)

ForestGardenGal | 232 comments Close- General Sherman is in Kings Canyon NP, in Tulare County. Calaveras Big Trees is a State Park in Calaveras County. I prefer it because it is a bit more off the beaten path, so less crowded and less expensive than the National Park. But yes, same trees- Giant Sequoia.

I'm gonna nerd out here for you...

Did you know there are only three types of redwoods on earth?...

Giant Sequoia redwoods (Sequoiadendron giganteum) only grow on the western slope of the central Sierra Nevada Mountains.
They grow up to 35 feet in diameter at the base (redwood tree diameters are measured at 6 feet up from the ground). They can be up to 314 feet tall and live up to 3,000 years!

Coastal redwoods (Sequoia sempervirens) only grow natively in the coastal ranges along the Pacific in No. California and So. Oregon. They grow up to 26 feet in diameter, 380 feet tall, and live up to 2,000 years.

Dawn redwoods (Metasequoia glyptostroboides) only grow in Central China and are tiny in comparison to the other two species.
They grow up to 6 feet in diameter, 140 feet tall, and live up to 400 years.

Fun facts, huh?

And if I remember correctly of the two in California, one has a spongy bark and one has a harder bark. Makes it easier to tell apart. Sequoia might have the spongy bark. They are sooo awesome.

Jen R. (rosetung) | 398 comments Yall are making me nostalgic! As is my current read (not a classic) which surprised me when I realized it's all about Oakland, and exactly the area where I lived for a bit in my 20s- East Oakland. The best camping I've ever experienced is definitely in northern CA.

ForestGardenGal | 232 comments Blueberry wrote: "And if I remember correctly of the two in California, one has a spongy bark and one has a harder bark. Makes it easier to tell apart. Sequoia might have the spongy bark. They are sooo awesome..."

Yep, Giant Sequoia has super spongy and really thick bark that is extremely fire resistant and helps keep these bad boys and girls alive for up to 3,000 years in our fire prone environment.

Jen wrote: "Yall are making me nostalgic!. . . The best camping I've ever experienced is definitely in northern CA..."

Nostalgia is one of the best feelings; it reminds us what is important to us and to do more of the things we have loved doing.

Oh hello, (quasi) neighbor. I'm American living in northern Germany, unfortunately still struggling with the language. I hear you on missing English and secondhand bookshops. One of my favorite things about return visits to the US- going to bookshops! I was excited to find a great one in Berlin earlier this year and I make trips there at least once a year, so at least I got that then...
