Gwen Matuszewski | 1 comments I found this series in my elementary school library around 2002, but I think they were published in the late 80’s/early 90’s. With things like abortion as subject matter, they were inappropriate for 10 year olds, so my friend’s mom had them removed from the library. Now that we’re older, we’ve tried to find them, but we don’t have much to go on. Each book was a different girl’s name—just their first name, and I think they were set in the 80s or 90s which is why I think they were also published during that time period. The covers of the books were oval portraits of each girl posing. Another plot my friend remembers is that the girl was at a ski resort and falling in love with the ski instructor!

Alan (alanjc) | 484 comments John Benton wrote a whole stack of YA books in the 1970s-80s with girls' names as titles (Carmen is one of them). As children's reading they are inappropriate AF, but at least one poster says that her elementary school library had them.

Or maybe one of the Degrassi novels? Spike and Shane involve an 8th grade couple facing a pregnancy, although the girl doesn't have an abortion.

Becca (beccalikesbooks) | 5545 comments Lisa by Betty Shaffer is from a Christian YA series called SpringFlower - originally published in the 80s, but reprinted in the 2000s.
80s cover:
Lisa (Springflower Books, #5) by Betty Shaffer
2000s cover:
Lisa by Betty Shaffer
A review on Librarything says: 'A 15-year-old comes up pregnant and must chose whether to have an abortion or not.' I'm not sure what Lisa decides in the end, but mentioning just in case.

Becca (beccalikesbooks) | 5545 comments There's also an Abortion in YA Fiction list that might be worth browsing.

Emily Wood | 66 comments Jilly Cooper had a series of with girls' names. Definitely not suitable for 10 yr olds. Can't remember if there was abortion, but quite possible. Harriet and Emily are the ones I remember.
