Well maybe HBO will pick this up as a series and come up with an ending for us... 🤷‍♀️😒

What's the backstory here with the third installment of the series? I am not familiar. But it sounds like the #2 came out in 2011, the same year as ADWD.

People hate seasons 6-8, but if it wasn't for the show, we would still have (view spoiler)

AHAHAHAH So true!

The backstory is that the third book will never be written. There is a rabbit hole there if you care to go down it.

I loved Name of the Wind regardless.

lmao :D
Rothfuss made a comment in 2012, saying that the version he was working on at the time was a three and a half-star book.
By my estimations the 3d book should therefore be out in about ten years :D Assuming his revisions exponentially get better every 10 years.
And since he already has the prologue and three chapters ready to publish (as of a year ago), my guess it'll be out in 2032.

In all seriousness though, I feel so bad for him and his mental health issues.

Caterina | 570 comments @Marc *Dark Reader of the Woods* - It's unfortunate to hear the book will never be finished. I would love all the backstory if you're willing to share.

@Lisa - I am sorry to hear this is about his mental health. I hope he's taking time for himself to get better; that's obviously more important than finishing a book.

I am interested in continuing on with this series, but given the info about the third book, does it make sense to read the second one? As I mentioned in a previous post, GRRM's A Dance with Dragons ends rather poorly for all the characters I liked and rather well for many terrible characters. I appreciate that the show gave us better outcomes (even if the last season failed to address many important issues). But with this series, there's no show to give us answers.

So I guess my question is: will the book end with Ambrose triumphing over Kvothe? There's an allusion to something like that and it's not the cliffhanger I want. If someone wouldn't mind addressing this in a spoiler tag, I would appreciate it.

Caterina, tell that to his fans and followers. Obviously, there's more nuance to the whole story and lack of communication, and readers' outrage, and the third book being +10 years in the works, etc.
And like Marc said that's a rabbit hole you can explore if you're interested. There's an endless well of information online.

At this point though, I believe his dug his own grave. Even if he does ever complete it. If it's not what Rothfuss fans have been waiting and expecting, they'll resent him, and continue questioning why it took so long.
If he doesn't finish, they'll still hate him because fandoms are a fickle B*

He recently said something along the lines, that he understands the frustration, but that no one could ever be as frustrated as he himself and his publisher are.

Lorraine | 2397 comments I will not be reading book 2 in February. Too many books scheduled. Will give me time to make a decision for it as Caterina made me think about reasons for reading book 2 or not.

I don't have more to add beyond what Lisa posted above. If you want the juice it's out there, but I don't want to rag on the man because I don't really know what's going on in his head.

Hanča (citron) | 94 comments I managed to get about half way through in January, After my last check in it didn't take long to peak my interest in the end (as soon as Abenthy came to the scene), but I just didn't have enough time to read last month.
My biggest hope is the book doesn't end on a cliffhanger, I am worried to read the next one because of the same reasons you all mentioned and not trusting very much the series will ever get finished. Oh well.

Caterina | 570 comments Thanks for all this info, @Lisa and @ Marc *Dark Reader of the Woods*!

@Hanča - We have two months for the next book sin the series, so there's still time to join us for the next one!
