The Perks Of Being A Book Addict discussion
ARCHIVE Team Challenge: UNO 2023

Team Quokka

Amy, can you please go through the task list and verify if these fit anywhere? Note that the "characteristic" tasks that are there are just the first few I could think off - if you can come up with others that suit the book and fit the animal description, go for it.
Let's try and use as many books as we can.

I will do that this afternoon.

- The White Cascade for #7 (snowy terrain)
- Virology for #16 (white cover)
- The Remedy for #50 (black cover)
- The Upright Thinkers for #87 (red cover)
- Cinderella Man for #100 (set in north america)
- Walk the Wild with Me for #74 (green cover)
- The Immortal Conquistador for #105 (character goes around the world)
I don't know enough the characters or plot points of The Extractionist or Shoggoths in Traffic to put them into a category yet, but I will add them where appropriate. They're both fiction, so they'll have more options than nonfiction would.

Asexual Fairy Tales

In that vein, most characters in folk tales don't really have names (like 'Sam' or 'Cassie') but are known in the story by some other designation (such as title, like 'Tailor' or 'Sultan') instead. Do those count as names for the purposes of Uno?

For question 1, it depends. Something like Disfigured: On Fairy Tales, Disability, and Making Space is Non-Fiction Fairy Tales, but Cinder is a Fiction Fairy Tale. If the GoodReads shelf calls it out as Fiction, that is what we should be using it as, Same for Non-Fiction.
Titles or Designations are not considered as names.

Titles or Designations are not considered as names.
So, Asexual Fairy Tales is the book I'm reading for the ace mini prompt. It isn't literary analysis the way Disfigured would be, but it's not a retelling in the fiction the way Cinder is; it's a collection of folktales with minimal 'rewrites' to include details from multiple versions of the story without changing the fundamental shape of the tale. I think it would count as fiction? But I'm not sure.
Okay, I will take note of actual names only, in case we can use for regular hands in addition to the mini prompt.

This was literally the question asked by some other team. Here is the response.
-------------------------------------
5Q: Would one option be to find 'word in text' like CAMOUFLAGE/D or ARCTIC or all letters in title, series or authors name?
5A: The problem I see with "word in text/title" is which words? The descriptions contain lots of words and it makes it a hard one to put guidelines around.
I would be ok with the name of the animal being in the text or title, though
---------------------------------------
So, while I'd wish that - this would not work. :(
I even realized that for "spider", it can't be just that, it has to be the "flower spider"! Ugh!

I'd say sweet potato - that animal is slightly tougher to find tasks for.

So I have to change my fear street book because I put it in the spider task.. uugghh.. The animals are hard to find in a text 😭

Amy, I think the 3 NY public libraries have the out of state library card service if I'm not mistaken. I work with Queens Library. If not, I'm happy to download audio/ebooks you prefer and put it in my cloud drive for you to access it.

I updated my post

I only have a couple more and five whole days to read them in, so I should be all good. Thank you so much for the offer, though; I really appreciate it! I will also look into the NY library cards; access to more collections is never a bad thing.

You're very welcome! :)
Captains, I think there was an error in the official sheet with Lessons in Chemistry? It's on hand 13.

Ummm? Yeah, it is on Hand 13!
Not sure I understand.

Sorry I wasn't clear. It was your name under read by instead of mine. I guessed you've changed it already.

Ah, yeah yeah caught that.
I haven't yet started reading it.
Thanks for catching it though! :)

If you're looking for Os in books, I've read a bunch so far that have had O names. They don't have a checkmark in the main March tab but do seem to be listed on the March Read tab, though, so I'm not sure if they've been counted.

You folks are absolute troopers!
We finished everything that was given to us.
A whooping 3080 points!!
Woot woot!!

I just finished my first April book, have added to spreadsheet

Good catch. It seems that the formula in that cell wasn't carried over and the Mods hand-wrote it there. Flagged it for them to fix.

ALL OF YOU DESERVE A MASSIVE PAT ON THE BACK!
Two months in and we have amassed every point we can and are doing really well on the leaderboard.
Massive hats-off of everybody for being flexible with your reading and going above and beyond to accommodate different books in your reading schedules.
Now, we just need to finish it with a bang!
April tracking sheet is already up, so feel free to log in all your prospective books.
Remember, the month starts only after the clock ticks to 0 here: https://www.timeanddate.com/countdown...

Re-read the last two chapters again tonight. LOL!

I'm sorry! We just finished all the stuff necessary to start an office renovation at work (mostly cleaning and moving - there's way too much cleaning involved in renovating, it's ridiculous) while maintaining all the operations to oversee and run programs, and I'm a teeny bit burnt out. I do go on vacation soon though, so I will complete my books. I just wanted to let everyone know what was going on.

Would this work for "pattern" for the mini?"
I think this should work. The red and yellow stripes are in a specific pattern from what I understand.
