Thank you for the German recommendation ! I've been meaning to read German books. I've bought the German version of the tales of Hans Christian Andersen years ago. However I've lent it to a friend that studied germanic languages at uni and unfortunately never saw it again. A bit sad since it was a very pretty textile (fabric?) covered hardcover book that I found in a secondhand shop.

Precisely why I no longer lend people books! I'd rather buy someone another copy than sit around waiting for years for a book that's never going to appear... :D

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 1019 comments Also, I don't have the Anderson ones yet! (although I've read most of the stories) But I have 2 copies of Grimm, lol.

must add to my wishlist that gets sent off to my family, lol.

message 655: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 5004 comments I've got a copy of Anderson but I keep wondering if its his complete tales.

Shame though that you never got your book back, Audrey! It's one of the reasons I'm also very weary of lending people books...

I'm hurt, Laura, so very hurt 🥹

Here's the new cover edition: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1...

I also updated the page count on the old edition since you still have to use that one for Turfs, I think.

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 1019 comments Just a heads-up that my computer is doing all kinds of bizarre stuff today. Suspect it's on its way out. So if I suddenly disappear for a couple of days, it's because I'm buying parts and building a new computer and regular service will continue once I'm done.

(I will also be bald, because there's nothing I hate to do more than setting up a new computer, and I will be tearing my hair out, lol)

Eldarwen | 5004 comments ATTENTION ATTENTION!

The time of the Mini Challenge has arrived!! :-D

HERE you can find all the information on the March mini challenge.

Please read through carefully and then give us a shout about the potential tasks you could be reading for.

A portion is to get creative, so we could with a bit of imagination make almost any book fit anywhere! The other two tasks are more specific and need a bit of research but I'm sure we can manage that just fine :-)

Have a read through and have fun!

Countdown to Start of the March Mini: https://www.timeanddate.com/countdown...

Eldarwen | 5004 comments March Mini Animal Tasks:

All animals require the following five tasks, i.e. five books:

Since the three characteristics are our creative part, we aren't going to track those all the time but if you are going to read a book you know is going to fit to a certain animal's description, give us a shout and we'll add them here. The important ones to find are location and colour because those are more specific.

Alaskan hare
- Location: Emily - set in Alaska
- Colour:
- Characteristic 1:
- Characteristic 2:
- Characteristic 3:

Arctic hare
- Location:
- Colour:
- Characteristic 1: Laura The Plight Before Christmas - book is set in winter, in winter arctic hares huddle for warmth; in the book, there will be an old-school Christmas with family huddling together for some Christmas spirit, i.e. warmth, hanging in a large group like the Artic hares do
- Characteristic 2:
- Characteristic 3:

Chameleons
- Location: Emily - set in Africa
- Colour:
- Characteristic 1:
- Characteristic 2:
- Characteristic 3:

Anoles
- Location:
- Colour:
- Characteristic 1:
- Characteristic 2:
- Characteristic 3:

Peron's Tree Frog
- Location: Eldarwen Force of Nature - set in Australia
- Colour:
- Characteristic 1:
- Characteristic 2:
- Characteristic 3:

Cephalopods
- Location: Sammy The Fortune of War - set at sea
- Colour:
- Characteristic 1:
- Characteristic 2:
- Characteristic 3:

Flower spiders
- Location:
- Colour: Eldarwen Thunderhead - can be green, among other colours
- Characteristic 1:
- Characteristic 2:
- Characteristic 3:

Golden Tortoise Beetle
- Location:
- Colour:
- Characteristic 1:
- Characteristic 2:
- Characteristic 3:

Chrysso spiders
- Location: Sammy The Door - set in Hungary
- Colour:
- Characteristic 1:
- Characteristic 2:
- Characteristic 3:

Please clearly state how your book fits a certain animal. Some are obvious, others not so much :-)

message 686: by Eldarwen (last edited Mar 11, 2023 11:30PM) (new)

Eldarwen | 5004 comments I can read:

Flower spiders:
I'm still reading Thunderhead (Arc of a Scythe, #2) by Neal Shusterman for the 7 Green, so that could go towards their colour task as, among other colours, they can be green.

Peron's Tree Frog:
I'm going to snag this one for the location of Australia, as I've been meaning to read Force of Nature which is set in Australia.

The other colour card book I'm going to read is Nightblade (Nightblade #1) by Ryan Kirk , which could potentially work for the Chrysso spider as they have blade-like hair on their legs, or it could work for something with trees, like Peron's Tree Frog, as there are a lot of trees on the cover. It could potentially also work for the Chameleons' colour task as those can become blue, too, like the cover. And those are just the obvious connections. There may be more once I start reading the book. Maybe seasons will change from autumn to winter or spring to summer in the book and that could be a connection. We shall see once I'm reading it.

message 687: by Sammy (last edited Mar 12, 2023 03:53AM) (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 1019 comments I can read The Fortune of War Aubrey-Maturin Series, Book 6 by Patrick O'Brian for the cephalopod location (set at sea), and I have The Husband's Secret by Liane Moriarty lined up that can work for the flower spider location (Australia). I also have The Door by Magda Szabó set in Hungary that can work for the Chrysso spiders.

Fun read then?

Also, I kinda love that apart from the Skip, both books we just posted at almost the same time work for the exact same cards :D

message 694: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 5004 comments Hahaha, funny that :-D

Yes, it was a fun read. Somewhat nuts, really! I still can't decide whether he is making fun of mindfulness or thinks it is an important thing to incorporate into one's well-being :-p

message 695: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 1019 comments A bit of both maybe?

I'll definitely bear it in mind if I'm ever feeling up to reading in German again! :)

message 696: by Eldarwen (new)

Eldarwen | 5004 comments Yeah, both seems probable. There are some interesting lessons in there for sure. Every chapter in the book is preceded by a mindfulness lesson, which then makes an appearance in the chapter, and all in tune with the story. Some things are really important to do for sure, and some things just create utter chaos if used in an odd way hehe.

message 697: by Sammy (new)

Sammy (sammystarbuck) | 1019 comments I can totally imagine it, lol.
