The Perks Of Being A Book Addict discussion
ARCHIVE Team Challenge: UNO 2023
>
Team Narwhal

I remember that one being kind of fun once I figured out what was going on.
I'm reading Dilettante: True Tales of Excess, Triumph, and Disaster which is kind of a memoir of how this guy got into the magazine industry made famous by The Devil Wears Prada.

I've read several standalone books already this month and have several others...this is unusual for me...but the non-fiction is growing on me. I think I'm getting better at picking good ones.

Wow that's so cool! Do you mean that you're listening, reading, and watching the same story at the same time? That sounds like a really great way to be more immersed in the story experience, but I'd love to hear how you make it work logistically so I could maybe try it out if you don't mind sharing! Hope you all are enjoying your March books so far!

:) Thanks Sarah :)
Leviathan Wakes is a sci-fi book. Sometimes it takes me a while to understand the world of sci-fi, so I knew I'd need some back-up. I started by downloading the audiobook and ebook from Libby (our library online system) (luckily, they were available at the same time! Sometimes you can buy the Kindle version of a book, and then get the audio added on for a fee though).
I listened to a chapter or two, and then went back over the details by skimming some of the ebook. This helped me to solidify character names, and place names. I like to listen to books, but sometimes I space out and don't remember details I'll need later.
I had heard that there was a television show for this series, so I looked it up. After listening to a few more chapters, I watched the first episode until I got about to the place I'm reading. The visual part is helping me to think about some of the locations where the book takes place. Some of the television show is not in the book, so I am also starting to wonder if those scenes will come in later, or if they just added them for the series. That also helps me stay connected to the reading and the audio.
I haven't read, listened to, and watched a book before, but I'm really enjoying it. I feel much more connected to the characters and their story.
Thanks for asking :) :) :)

Nice!
I also really liked The Library Book. Aside from the story, I also liked the book itself - it's all fancy!

That sounds awesome, thanks for taking the time to explain! I can definitely see how that would make the characters and story more meaningful, and I can't wait to try it sometime, maybe with my next March book! :)

I like doing this format with really long books and especially fantasy that is all new to me. It helps me concentrate and absorb what's going on better.

Very cool.
It would be fun to make a list of books this works well for! Like which books have good adaptations to them.
I thought the most recent Dune movie was really good. I might re-read the book before the second part comes out.
I bet it would work well for Lord of the Rings.
Does anyone know of some good adaptations of books on film?

How is the book It Starts With Us? I'm really interested, as I've read It Ends With Us, and I really liked it.

Hey everyone...the mini is likely just around the corner! Just a reminder to everyone to try and checkin this weekend or until you get a chance to review mini details...I'm not sure when it will be posted, but it will be soon!

I've got 'Ends' on my tbr as well !"
Nice!
I'll definitely have to read it!

Team Narwhal...it's time to be CREATIVE! Which means the sky is practically the limit. I say this...but of course there are caveats...the underlying rule is creativity is a must with this one.
There are 5 tasks for each animal...see details in the next post. The first 2 tasks are reserved for 'color cover' and 'location'.
The other 3 are for 'creative characteristics'. Note I'll also put this next post at the top of our main thread for convenience.
Forget about using page counts, NO word in text unless it's the SPECIFIC animal. If you find a picture of the specific animal on the cover, that's ok...but no variations. Again, think 'characteristics!
If you have questions about whether something will work, please ask them here in this thread. Your captains will rule on whether something iffy will work or not.
Be very specific in your 'REASON' on the SS...and if it works for something else, please note it so things can be moved around.
Your captains have worked up some examples and we'd love to have all of you add to those ideas. They will/are posted on the WSS under a separate tab 'CREATIVE IDEAS FOR MINI'. Have a look at what your fellow teammates have posted and you can also spy on other teams if you like ;)
PLEASE find a home for any books you are currently reading that won't finish until after the start of the MINI on the MINI tab ASAP. We want to maximize what we've already got going and avoid searching for what's right under our noses.
Mahi is working on the Spreadsheet now...so that will be posted soon.

Animal Colour Transformations! A March Mini Challenge
This is an optional mini challenge for our UNO players.
We have given you a list of 9 animals that can change colour. You can read up to 5 books per animal using the descriptions as inspiration.
◈ One book per animal must relate to one of its colours by reading a book with that coloured cover
◈ One book per animal must relate to its location by reading a book based in that location's country or with an author that lives, or was born in, that country.
◈ The remaining three books must relate to a characteristic of the animal in some way as per the description given - get creative!
Example
Animal - Arctic Hare
Description - In the Canadian regions of Newfoundland and southern Labrador, the Arctic hare changes its coat color, moulting and growing new fur, from brown or grey in the summer to white in the winter, like some other Arctic animals including ermine and ptarmigan, enabling it to remain camouflaged as the environment changes
Books to read:
1. Colour cover - could be a brown, grey or white cover
2. Location - could be based in Canada or by a Canadian author
3-5. Characteristic - get creative! Find a book with ermine in the text, where someone changes their appearance, buys a coat in a new colour, where an environment changes (e.g. flood/fire/war), where the book moves through the seasons of summer to winter etc.
Note: You can use the colour cover or location a second time as a characteristic, but only one of these not both.

◈ Each book read can only be used for one task.
◈ For each book read you receive 10 points.
◈ If you complete all 45 tasks, your team will receive 30 bonus points.
◈ Books can be started at any point since the start of the UNO challenge (Feb 1)
◈ Books need to be finished after the start of this mini challenge on March 15, 9am UTC. Countdown is here: https://www.timeanddate.com/countdown...
and before April 1 at 9am UTC (When the April month of UNO begins)
◈ Books used for this mini challenge do not need to be separate books for what you are claiming for your UNO hands
◈ The usual book length rules apply
◈ Team spreadsheets will be updated with a mini challenge tab so that you can track your books and claim your points
◈ The books you are reading for each animal MUST relate to the description given and not any other sources. (So, for example, reading a green cover for chameleon is not valid as green isn't given as a colour in the description).

1. 'March Mini' - where you enter your books
2. 'CREATIVE IDEAS FOR MINI' - where you can see animal descriptions and ideas to fit books
Books finished after March 15, 9am UTC will count

Key is to explain your logic on the SS.
Peron's Tree Frog (from description)
"The frog has mottled yellow and black thighs, armpits, and groin."
Book--The Last Beekeeper, which is about bees, which are yellow and black.
This description works :)
Alaskan Hare
Fits for shedding his layers of clothing and fur coat-> In the book Carter arrives back at the retreat, he removes his winter snow suit, boots, socks and warms himself by the fire. Page 44.

I just finished my third book for March, and I updated the spreadsheet. I'm hoping to read a few more books this month, so I added my current read and one other..."
Nice! Thanks for updating!
We got a big snowstorm here yesterday. I was doing a lot of plowing, and I am between audio books :( So I plowed in silence!! So weird.....
I am really trying to get creative with my books....

That's awesome.
I'll be curious to see what you come up with!
I'm trying to figure out how to make a book about coffee fit.... no luck so far....

I read a middle grades book that I really liked called The Thing I'm Most Afraid Of. I also finished Leviathan Wakes which was a rather impressive space opera. I think I'll try to read the second one at some point.

I loved Leviathan Wakes but never got around to reading the next book in the series. I’d probably have to go back and read it again if I wanted to continue with the series.

I liked

I put an X to the left of the color cards to show which have been used for wild draw 4. Hopefully that helps us find the rest.

I know. I don't want to forget the characters or the plot line, but they're just such big books!!

How is the tour? It sounds wonderful. My husband just traveled there recently. Where are you going on your tour?

Totally. I think that works.

So far we’ve walked 25 miles. Very informative and our group is enjoyable. Awesome experience I recommend to anyone.

It’s time for everyone to evaluate your books claimed and if you can claim a few final books if you have time.

Round 2 is nearly complete!
We still have 5 available slots for the week 2 mini with just over 1 week to go.
I see the April card is posted to our main…Mahi will post April for claiming to our WSS soon.
Remember this next round will be a bit longer yet…I see only 5 DRAW2 cards…this is an awesome hand for us…more to read…but more points…woohoo!
Same approach as other months…claim color and REV 1st if possible…about what you’ll read in a week for the start. If we can get in a few extra early with some shorter books…pls do so if you’re interested.
