Mahi | 27 comments Ah it's been a while since I read Redwall, I kind of want to again - I'm glad you like it!

I don't think I'll read the Poirot series all in order (too much of the same thing probably won't be good) but I'm definitely going to pick up more of them. I read the Murder on the Orient Express a couple weeks ago and that was my first time reading Agatha Christie and it was great.

Our MARCH UNO Card has been posted! -> https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/...

Try to follow these tips with claiming cards before the Mini is posted mid-month.

1. Limit claims to just 2 to start to allow all teammates to claim a few color cards

2. Claim color cards (includes WILD4) and REV cards 1st if possible. We have 19 color cards this round + 5 REV. 4 yellow.
Note: if you see someone's claimed a card for a book you've read and they haven't placed it on a REV card, feel free to speak up.

3. The more difficult cards...those tend to be 5/I and 7/V...we have lots of 7/V this round.

We have 1 additional hand this round which shouldn't be a problem for us as we have 3 more days. The Mini will also be a bit longer, so while we will be good to get going on our reading...lots to do, we should be cautious of over-claiming around mid-month to be sure we can get both done.

We aren't strict on these guidelines, but it will help our team if we all try to take these points in to account.

Your thoughts on how we’re doing for February and suggestions for being better in March are welcome!

I should have Seven Husbands done by Saturday. I also am reading Redwall for the mini (didn't find a place for it on the main.)

I am about halfway done with No such Queen and am hoping to have it done tonight or tomorrow at the latest.

Melissa | 597 comments This is like the marathon section of the challenge... please keep posting extra books in case someone can't finish one :)

I'm getting ready to plow through another book. I've got my milk and cookies.

Do you all snack or eat while you read? Or during breaks? (sometimes I like to think of work as just a break in reading,.... lol)

There's two kinds of reading for me: audiobooks which tend to be the lighter books I read. Usually while doing housekeeping or running errands. And then lying on the couch with a book in one hand and tea or a cocktail in the other.

My waistline confirms I'm a snacker...I follow what Jax does only I use a recliner :) I read a lot of audio...I'm in the car a lot.

I'm an in-between snacker. Too much page swiping or page flipping going on to snack while I'm reading.
I'm lucky enough to have a pretty chill job where once I get the bulk of my work done I can sneak in a chapter or two.

message 212: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 597 comments Yes, I like to listen to audio while doing chores and errands too. I also love a snack at the table for serious reading, and a beverage and the couch for chill reading.
Sneaking a chapter or two at work is key. We have sustained silent reading (I'm a teacher) so when I'm not hounding the students to read, I'm "modeling" reading myself :)

Deb (deb1902) | 67 comments Hi Everyone. Sorry I haven’t checked in. It’s crazy at work at the moment but that means lots of driving. I am a recently converted audio book listener. I used to think it was cheating. I don’t tend to listen to anything too complex, a rom com or similar work well, otherwise I am forever rewinding.
Looking forward to March and hope to be able to get a few of the books on my bedside table finished.
Have a great weekend. Deb

I'm glad it's not cheating as I do a lot of that audio reading! I can't do it for all books...it seems I don't have a problem with my favorite genres...but the more complicated books that have a ton of characters...I really have to be concentrating to follow along.

Thanks everyone who has checked in thus far!

message 215: by Emma (M) (new)

Emma (M) | 21 comments I don’t tend to snack when reading, but that’s probably because I do most of my reading at night after dinner. Although all this talk of snacking is making me feel peckish!

Tammie | 1392 comments A question came up requesting a clarification on when books for the next round can be started…the answer is now:)
We can’t bank books…meaning books must be recorded during the round they are finished.
This goes for the mini as well…you could start a book today, and as long as you finish it after the official start it could be counted.

Any questions…let us know…so if you’ve finished reading for our first round…ok to get started for March!

Our 1st round is nearly complete!
Just over 2 days to go.
For those still reading--
✔ Please be sure your books have a 'read date' and are on your UNO Shelf before our trusty countdown runs out. I'll appreciate it if you can be done at least 12 hours early as last minute is no fun for the captains :(
OFFICIAL COUNTDOWN -> https://www.timeanddate.com/countdown...

✔ What was your favorite book during Round 1? If you can recommend it...tell us why we'll love it!

✔ Is there a book you are excited about for March reading? Tell us a few details if you like.

Anyone ever been to Israel...I'm traveling with some girl friends for 2 weeks there in March...any advice?

Tammie | 1392 comments @Jax...I moved Crooked Kingdome to hand 13

@Melissa...If The Secret Keeper could work for the DRAW2 in hand 4, could you move it there? I'm didn't move because this is a common title...wasn't sure which you were reading.

@Mahi...I moved Finlay to hand 13

@Sarah...I moved The Perfect to hand 14

Thanks much!

message 220: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 597 comments I'm going to read The Secret Keeper. Which other one were you thinking of for hand 4?

message 221: by Melissa (new)

Melissa | 597 comments Lord in heaven, I just finished the slog through India with the brutal East India Company......The Anarchy: The East India Company, Corporate Violence, and the Pillage of an Empire
Phew.
Also finished In West Mills which I ended up liking quite a bit.
Just the rest of Spoiler Alert which is lovely. Then I'll be done for February!
Then,... I'll rate them!

THE Secret Keeper 2 and 7?

Tammie | 1392 comments Melissa wrote: "Riiiiiight.
THE Secret Keeper 2 and 7?"

Yes...I wasn't sure which 'Secret Keeper' book you are reading...so if it can work for the DRAW2 in hand 4, could you move it there. I'm trying to get those all filled...as there are lots of 7s and a few double draw2s on our sheet this round. Hope to have these done and out of the way by the time the mini rolls around...if we can at least have a head start anyway.

Yes! I love these challenges!!
I saw your name for the Game Night Bingo :) I'm doing that one too :)
And then the ATY community one, the settings A-Z from 2023 Reading Challenge group, the genre one from TOAP - it's like a puzzle and reading all at once, and I love it :) There's one where you have to look for food in books - My Restaurant Rocks, and I still think, "wow, that would be awesome for our restaurant!" when I read about a curry or ingredients for a quiche :)

I've expanded my reading so much due to these challenges, and I am grateful for them.
Which do you do?

That's my favorite part of a new month. I like to have 2 or 3 challenges going (more than that and it's a little crazy). It's like a game of tetris getting books to fit prompts.

If anyone is looking for reccomendations:
Carrie Soto is Back and the 7 Husbands of Evelyn Hugo were great. I didn't like the rest of the books in this universe but I really liked those two. I also thought Remarkably Bright Creatures and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo were great reads. Was really disappointed in The Mosquito Bowl and the Marvellers. Both were just too uneven for me.

I loved 7 Husbands and Girl/Tatoo as well!
Carrie Soto is definitely on the list :)
I’m adding Remarkably/Creature as everyone seems to love that one!

Most of the books for February were recommendable. My favorite was Magic Tides…I love the Kate Daniel’s character! I started the Mercy Thompson series and will definitely continue that.

I’ve got about 4 books already in progress so I’ll have a big jump to start the month off…a few surprises that I didn’t think I was going to like and I’m enjoying.

message 230: by Jax (new)

Jax (jaxn) | 102 comments If you pick up Remarkably Bright Creatures I recommend the audiobook. It's very well done.

I find myself at times with four books at once and wonder what happened. I used to be a strict One book at a time person but I think now with Audio and Digital books being so easy to access I have a terrible habit of starting and stopping books all over the place. It's part of why I like challenges, forcing me to finish all these bookmarked books.

Hey everyone...we're all checked in and have risen from the bottom to #5 in the ranks:) GREAT WORK! All cards UNO and the MINI would completed 100% which is key to having a good position with this challenge.
Most important...I hope you are all enjoying it!

There's nothing else we could have done...this is the luck of the draw of the cards...I want to thank everyone for your reading contributions to the team...as we progress with the challenge, each month gets a bit more difficult.

Remember the strategy around mini-time and be aware of finish timing as the mini gets closer...that aspect will be more difficult as well. If you have questions about this, please ask :)

Jo is this one of those romance cliff hanger books...where 5 books are really like 1 long book?
I'm going to try it probably next month...but not if it's the cliff hanger style.
Thanks

I have not..l do like a good cozy mystery now and then. My favorite is
Kristen Painter’s Nocturne Falls series.
I’m currently liking Antiques & Collectibles Mysteries…I wouldn’t reread, but it’s entertaining and I don’t have to concentrate too much to read.

I'm always reading a bunch at a time too :) My friend has it dialed in - she has one book in one location of the house, another in another location, the Kindle in her purse for waiting for folks she's picking up, and the audio for housework. It's genius. :)
