ARCHIVE Team Challenge: UNO 2023
>
Team Ground Pangolin
Hello everyone!I'm Veronica, and I'm very excited to play UNO with you all. This is my third year playing, second as captain. I see we have experienced players and some new ones. Don't worry, we are all here to help you sort things out. This is a fun way to torn down that big pile of TBR some might have, and to discover new and interesting reads. And of course talk about books 😁.
But also I'd love to know about you. What's been your favorite read so far this year? Please introduce yourselves, let us know your hobbies and favorite genres, all you want to share.
I'm from Mexico and a stay at home mom of three. I've been in a sabbatical for two years, and probably staying for a little longer. Besides reading I like to play guitar and cook. I like most genres but I prefer non-fiction about history, science and psychology. For fiction I like science fiction, fantasy, historical and horror.
Lets play!

Hi!My name is MH. I’ve played most rounds of Uno (and captained several rounds) but had to skip last year. I’m from Sweden and read mostly mysteries, especially Nordic crime.

Hi everyone! My name is Ashley and this is my 4th year playing UNO. My sister also plays and is the one who introduced me to it. I always forget to try to get on her team. Anyway, I live in the United States (specifically the state of Ohio) and I am so excited to begin the challenge.I am a SAHM of 2 kiddos (ages 4 and 17 months) and we also have a dog. I am active in a local MOMS Club and am the co-founder of an in person book club. Our February read is The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo which just so happens to have a green cover. It is one of my favorite books I've read in the last few years, so I'm excited to reread it and it will work perfectly for UNO too!
I mostly read thriller/suspense and contemporary. I also enjoy listening to a good celebrity memoir. Honestly, I'll try just about anything though. I enjoy the occasional read outside of my comfort zone.
I'm Mary. I'm from Massachusetts and on EST time. 52, married with one adult kid I'm not ready to throw out yet. My profile pic is my furbaby Lucy. I read pretty much any genre but tend to avoid anything overly religious, and too heavy on the erotica. Nothing against either, just not really my thing anymore. Also a little picky on YA and New Adult but I like some. Hubby frequently goes to bed really early due to work hours and I like to listen to audio books while I do needlework. Also lucky enough to be able to listen quite a bit a work. I have played UNO several times and have captained/co captained a lot of team challenges.
Hello everyone! I’m Kristen and I’m from Southern New Jersey! This is my third year playing UNO and I had a blast playing last year! I love reading all types of books but I especially love suspense, horror, thriller, and romance! I cannot wait to play with you all this year! As soon as I get to my laptop I will post the link to my UNO Shelf and add the books I enjoyed last year! I look forward to speaking with you all soon!
Hi! My name is Sarah and this is my second year doing UNO. I just loved it last year and how it made me read some more of my TBR pile as well as pick some books I wouldn't normally gravitate towards. My favorite genres are thrillers/mystery and historical fiction. But I have been enjoying some sci-fyi, horror, and romance as well as occasionally non-fiction and memoirs. I am from the US and live in Michigan. I work full time as Pediatric Critical Care Nurse Practitioner. Still trying to figure out how to quit my day job and read books full time for my current salary!
Looking forward to hearing about what everyone is reading and working together to complete the UNO challenge
I know this might be a little early for this, and I'm not sure how this team will do things as every team I've been on has done things slightly differently... but I just at the took a peek at the spreadsheet and saw our hands and would be happy to claim 3 Green right off the bat, as I know I will be reading The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo.
I will definitely be willing to pick up more colored cards later, but I just wanted to throw that out there since we only have one green card.
Hi all! I'm Lucy and this is the first time I've ever done this :) I'm a research scientist in oncology and I live in Cambridge, UK.
So excited to meet you all and get through some of my TBR in the process!
Hi all!! My name is Sarah! I am in Michigan & this is my 6th year playing Uno. This is my ultimate favorite time of year and I look forwards to it ALL year. I am a therapist & am single with no little ones so I have a lot of time to give to Uno when it comes around. Besides reading, I love to spend time with my pup, Misha, garden, kayak (when it's warm enough lol), and travel. I read a lot of romance, graphic novels, etc. So far this year I have been in the midst of a few series and am enjoying them (Bonds That Tie & Zodiac Academy). I'm a mood reader and tend to have a minimum of 3 books going at once so I have no problem putting something down and starting something new if we need it for a card. I just made my uno shelf but I'm having a hard time linking it so I will do that ASAP.

I'm totally on board on claiming color cards, just let us know and I'll reserve it on the cards tab. I've found that one fine strategy is to tackle first the color, reverse and 5(I), 7(V) and 9(N) cards, and planners can be on it, while mood readers finish off the others as they go. And for the ones that are a little bit of both, hunt when you want, or read what you want and we'll find it a place. So, a laidback approach.
What do you think?
I'll try to post at least once on weekends with an update to see how we are doing and if something needs our attention.
Hi all!My name is Hannah. I'm recently married, a step-mom to an amazing little girl, and newly pregnant with our second little one. I've honestly been reading a bit less due to sickness, but challenges keep me more focused on my reading goals. This is my first year playing UNO and I'm excited to see how it goes!

I have a 9 Blue. I put it on the tracking sheet. I ran the cover through tineye color extractor and it says it's 53% blue.
I think Veronica's plan works well. I would also hope that most of us won't mind if our books get moved to a non-color card if we end up with multiples.
Color cards be used for the Wilds to right? For more points?
I'm a partial planner. I like to scope out some books but not too many because sometimes library wait list books come up, other team challenges or I get in the mood for a specific genre/author.
Hannah wrote: "Not sure how far out we are planning, but I could cover the 4 Blue if needed.
"No problem claiming it, but I don't think it's blue enough 🤔. Let me ask the other captains if it goes. One tool we can use is Tineye
https://labs.tineye.com/color/
It's not 100% reliable, but it gives you a hint. It has to be at least 50% the color.

Yes, we have 4 Wild Draw, so they'll be put to good use anyway.
I'm definitely more of a mood reader, so I'm open to just seeing how my books fit in. If there's any cards that we seem to be struggling to fill though, I can always try to find something that fits for those too. I'm flexible with my reading
Just to check before I start adding things to the spreadsheet- do we add in the books we plan to read (filling the rest of the columns) in the 'feb log' tab and then captains will sort these into the 'feb cards' tab as appropriate?
I’m a total mood reader so I’m terrible at picking books in advance, but I usually try to pick books that work for multiple options so they can be moved around if needed :)
LucyReads wrote: "Just to check before I start adding things to the spreadsheet- do we add in the books we plan to read (filling the rest of the columns) in the 'feb log' tab and then captains will sort these into t..."That's right, the Feb cards tab will be managed by Mary and me. Just fill in the log.
I see there are a few reverse cards for February too. Anyone have any favorite books they'd like to suggest? Here are some of my favorites:
-Book Lovers - Emily Henry
-Kaikeyi - Vaishnavi Patel
-It Ends With Us - Colleen Hoover
-The Four Winds - Kristen Hannah
Can someone remind me when we have to START the books in order for them to count?

This is the countdown:

February 1st is the day books start to count.
For the next two months, March and April, books can be started the prior month.

I could read
for Blue 2 if everyone thinks the cover is blue enough. I was also planning to read
for a book club that I am in next month. Not sure if anyone has read it and would work as a reverse. But sure it will fit somewhere.

This sounds great! Thank you!
I am a planner, but I plan based on prompts from another challenge I do. I will get my prompts on the 28th of the prior month, so will be able to plan for February on or after the 28th. I will have flexibility though if I need to adapt later in the month for the minis.

In previous years, my teams have added all teammates as friends to make it easier with the reverses. I'm going to send you all requests for this purpose.
Side note: as I was requesting friends, I noticed that Kristen and I have the same birthday (only I'm 5 years older). Just thought this was a fun fact!
I would also suggest for the Reverse: if you see someone put a book on there that you have already read, note that in the Reverse column for it so we know it also works for that.I've read The 7 Husbands of Evelyn Hugo so I marked that. Just in case.

This seems like a great (and slightly obvious) idea that I have never thought of in my years playing. Thank you!

I have also read this, but does it have to be read within Feb/March/April to count? Or can it be any book you have ever read? Sorry for all the newbie questions!
Pretty sure it's always been just that someone else on the team has read it before you. So if one of us reads a book this month, another could read it for Reverse in March or April. Reading them in the same month might not count. I remember, in previous rounds, doing that myself: someone on my team read a book I wanted to read and I read it the next month. Because when picking books out I'd peruse the previous month's read for ideas and I'd usually see at least one that was already on my radar as something I wanted to read.
