I think maybe we're all just not sure what to talk about until we start. I'm waiting for my prompts for my other monthly challenge to do any more planning but I have my eyes on a book for Red 0. I'm going to go ahead and put it on the spreadsheet. If it doesn't work, I can easily find something else to cover the Red 0. (I'll also know before the month even starts so it won't be an issue for us at all.)
Oops, I meant to include that this is the book. It looks like Hannah has already read it so it will also work for reverse if needed.
Hi! I'm desperately trying to finish my last three books of this month, but I'm struggling with one which is a read for a book club. I usually just DNF a book that drags but I kind of want to finish this one. Is not that bad, just too slow. I have a few reads ready to start the challenge. Making sure they're not that long and that I've been really looking forward to read.
Also I have a bad case of sciatica, so I'm having trouble finding a comfortable position to read, the worst!
Ugh sciatica is awful. A massage usually helps me out with that.

One of my prompts is POC nonfiction and I know I could look this up somewhere, but I can never remember where, so I'm going to just start by asking here. Am I remembering correctly that you can't really use "characters" for nonfiction? I'm trying to pick something that I already want to read and would be helpful for UNO. As of now, I'm leaning toward Finding Me by Viola Davis (because I want to read it and it would work with the F in the title and the V in her name) but I guess I just want to know about characters in nonfiction for consideration and future reference.
I'm definitely looking forward to February reading!

I don't know what it means to use or not characters in non-fiction. I also do challenges and when I've found this prompt I usually go for memoirs, just like the one you mentioned. I would recommend "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings" by Maya Angelou and "In the Dream House" by Carmen Maria Machado. For non memoirs (and maybe that's what you mean with not characters?) "All About Love: New Visions" by bell hooks is one I have my eye on to read this year.
I just went looking for the bell hooks book in my ebooks library and it has a big red cover 😁, so I might use it for a Red 3 if we get one.

Oh, I just meant for UNO when I was talking about using characters. Basically I guess what I was saying is that with nonfiction I believe for UNO you can only use the title, author, and standalone/series information to fulfill UNO cards. For the Viola Davis book for example, if she talks about other people in her life (husband, child, friends, siblings, co-workers, etc) we can't use them for the "character name" fulfillment of an UNO card. Like her husband's name is Julius Tennon, but if he's in the book we still couldn't use him for 2. I'm not sure if I just made that more or less confusing. I'm going to see if I can find where I've seen this info in previous years.
Okay, follow up: I found this in the 2022 All About UNO Team Challenge thread. I don't see this "general questions" post in this year's thread. Not for the majority of non fiction books, (it opens the doors to books that have a zillion royals listed for example), unless of course the non fiction book is something like "Eat Pray Love" which is told like a novel with limited characters. "

Oh yes, you are right. I'm doing two 2023 reading challenges and I got confused. They always have prompts like that. That's a problem I have when playing UNO since I tend to read more non-fiction, but the upside is that it makes me read a lot more novels.
Usually just the author, co-author and narrator count as far as people go for non-fiction. These were both really good books and work for the non-ficiton POC prompt.
I've already read Born a Crime and thought it was very good. I'll have to check out On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous. I've never heard of it. I think I'll stick with

y'all my brain is stumped on this. I am reading two books right now that I do not think I will finish by 2/1. If I finish them within the challenge, I can't count them towards hands, right?

I can't wait to get this challenge started with about 36 hours to go! I had so much fun the last time. I added 2 books to read to spreadsheet as those are bookclub picks that I am in. Otherwise, I am a bit of mood reader and will pick based on that or need of challenge. I like when the mini challenges are thrown in because that can change things up sometimes.
I have had a lack of motivation to do much reading lately. Hopefully this gets me reading more instead of watching tv.
The library will be dictating my first reads. I've had some wait listed books come in this week.
Just want to make sure I do everything correctly. Once I finish a book, I should add to the UNO shelf that I created, correct? And that's where they will be verified and added to our spreadsheet?

And that's where they will be verified and added to our spreadsheet?"Captains, please correct me if I'm wrong, but when you finish a book you will mark the date you finished it in the designated column on our spreadsheet/log (where we are putting books now) and add it to your UNO shelf. Also, make sure you mark it "read" like you normally would on GoodReads. Your job with that book is then done. The captains will move it from the spreadsheet we are currently using to wherever it will fit in our hands. And feel free to ask questions at any point if you aren't sure what to do or get overwhelmed. When the mini challenges come mid month, there will likely be another place to document, but we'll all be here all challenge and this chat is a great place to bring questions as they arise!
I finished my last January book this afternoon. I'm excited for UNO to begin. My first 3 reads are on the spreadsheet, and I have tentative plans but will have a lot of flexibility in the second half of the month to adapt to the mini or whatever else we might need. I'm trying to make note of any books I'm considering that might work for some of the trickier numbers (looking at 5 and 7 mostly).

About your questions.
- You have to start your books on Feb 1st to count for UNO.
- You only have to fill in the February log tab, the February cards tab will be filled by Mary and me.
- All books finished have to be in your UNO shelf to be counted and verified. You can have your to-read books in there, but try not to have too many, it's easier for us captains to work with a neat shelf.
I decided to put aside both books I started on the weekend, I'm not going to be able to finish them, they are long and didn't even work for UNO. The problem with non-fiction. I'm ready and excited to start, this game always keeps me motivated. Hope you have fun too!

my first book will be next of kin, I've been inhaling it today. I'm such a mood reader that I never plan out my uno but I will pick up whatever is needed :)
I'd love some direction of what books to look for next. Anyone have any feedback on what we might be lacking right now? I think I'm going to finish one of my reads in the next couple days, so just want to keep my eyes open for what would be most helpful.
We got a lot of reverse cards, so maybe if you take a look at Compare books with any teammate, you might find a book of your Want to read list you are ready for. Other option would be to look for 7(V) and 5(I), which tend to be the hardest to find.
Hannah, you have a Blue 2 right now, I finished mine it was very short, but we still need yours for a WD4 card, so no worries. Same for the Red 0, I started one, but I think Ashely has one on the log, still needed, although it is also a reverse, but we'll see where they will be placed as we go along.
Any formatting you see on the log is made by me, for control purposes. So you don't need to worry about that, only logging the finished date.
Is there a page requirement for books? I feel like I read somewhere that it had to be over 200 pages, but I may be making this up!

I copied the following from the All About UNO 2023 thread:
"Books must be more than 100 pages in length and Children's books, Graphic Novels, Manga, Cook Books, Plays and Poetry books can not be used unless by word count they can be verified as more than 25,000 words using arbookfind.com or more than 3 hours of audio using a reputable website (e.g. audible, overdrive)"

Yes! Thanks Mary, book links and shelf checking would be great, I tend to drag in that area. I can keep up with the log and card placing, but be my guest if you want to take a look at the cards every now and then, you may see a master move by shuffling around.

Hello everyone.I just updated our spreadsheet, 5 days in and looks good. I picked Green 3 and Blue 2 for two of the WD4, so the ones reading those color books the color card is waiting for you. We have Red 0 also duplicated so that's the next WD4. Once we've gone further I'll start pointing which ones are getting behind, but for now, it's an open and fertile field.

I'm actually a big fan of all the reading I've done so far this month. The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo was a reread for me, but it's probably my favorite book and I loved it just as much the second time around. I'm also really enjoying Finding Me by Viola Davis and have about an hour of audio left so I'll finish that tonight or tomorrow. I can hardly put The Flight Plan by Julie Clark down and should finish it tonight as well.I'm going to make some decisions on my next reads and add them to the spreadsheet. I know at least one on my radar will work for 7, but I'll keep our other needs in mind as well. I feel like the beginning of the year always gets me even more excited about reading and UNO really helps with that too!
Just looked up the book I was planning to read for 7 and it has a blue cover.
It does not however, seem to work for 4... at least reading not that I can tell before reading it. It works for a few other numbers, so if we could switch a different one to 4 make that work we could have that as an option... or just use it for a 7.Adding it to the spreadsheet now.
Okay... changing course and reading this one next for the Blue 4. I'll either circle back to Not Like the Movies after it or save it for March if it would be better then.

Sorry I haven't read more. I've been a little depressed since my sister passed away right after New Years. I've just been kind of blah about reading. But Sweep of the Heart has revved up my reading enthusiasm. Also, I have a couple of library downloads that are due this week that I waited a long time for, so I'll be speed reading those. One definitely works for 7.
I just finished the blue 2 book I was reading! I'm starting "Not a Happy Family" now which would qualify as a Blue 4 or a reverse. It looks like Kristen has read it before. We can use it however is most needed.I've enjoyed a lot of the books I've read so far! Playing UNO has actually inspired me to read a lot more than I was. I've already read as many book as I read in all of January, haha!
