Kirra Hayward is an ordinary sixteen year old - smarter than most, but otherwise completely anonymous. When she stumbles across an unusual puzzle on the internet and manages to solve it, she has no idea of what she's letting herself in for. Kidnapped by a shadowy organisation known only as The Industry, Kirra soon discovers how valuable her code-breaking skills are. And when she stubbornly refuses to help them, they decide to break her ... by any means at their disposal. Kirra knows that to protect herself, she must trust no one, not even her fellow prisoner, Milo. But as time goes by she realises he might be the only person she can rely on ...
It was about a teenage girl who solves a puzze/code online, and it turns out that she is one of only about 1% of the population who is able to crack the code. She is kidnapped as she is considered a code-cracker, and is kept in a windowless room and forced to work for the bad guys cracking codes.
I think that after she refuses to continue helping them (and is ready to die), a teenage/early 20's guy is dumped in the room with her. He has been tortured, and it turns out that he can solve codes as well. The girl agrees to help the bad guys to save him from being hurt more.
They escape/are rescued and she discovers that the guy she was held with is one of the bad guys and manipulated her into caring for him to use her code-cracking skills.
It might be the first book in a set - and I am pretty sure it had a dark cover with a code/puzzle on the front.
Could you please help me find my book? It has been niggling in my brain for the past year or so!! Thanks :)
