Kristie | 5928 comments Hi Everyone!

This folder is for buddy reads!! The way this works is that if someone wants to read a book that is not chosen for BotM, you suggest it in this thread. Then, if other members want to read with you they can agree to a buddy read. You choose a date, start a new thread in this Buddy Reads folder for the book and discuss! Make sure you add the title of your book and a date to your thread so others that want to join the discussion know when you're reading.

Happy reading!

Lana ʕ •ᴥ•ʔ | 10 comments Does anyone want to buddy read the seven husbands of Evelyn Hugo?

It’s a big ‘un, 990 pages in my edition, so I would love some buddies to help me on the path.

I have it in my to be read, so I would like to read it sometime.

message 14: by Christopher (new)

Christopher Herndon | 8 comments I just picked up Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow from the library. I’d be down to join in. It’s in my next 5 to be read. So I can bump it up if need be.

message 15: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (lizaland) | 16 comments I just started reading it so let's make a thread for it?

message 16: by Thirza (new)

Thirza | 43 comments Yes that's fine, I'll make sure I get the book

message 17: by Christopher (new)

Christopher Herndon | 8 comments I’m down. I’ll start it tonight after work. What’s your average pace for reading? I don’t want to get too far ahead or fall to behind.

message 18: by Thirza (new)

Thirza | 43 comments Most of the time I read one or two chapters a day😅

message 19: by Jess (new)

Jess Combs (jesscombs) | 128 comments @anne, I’d be interested in reading Bleak House with you! I read some Charles Dickons when I was younger but haven’t read that one.

message 20: by Kristie, Moderator (Retired) (new)

Kristie | 5928 comments Hi everyone! Feel free to start a thread for your book discussions for any books you agree to. Let me know if you need any help.

Anne (dagdvm) | 441 comments Jess wrote: "@anne, I’d be interested in reading Bleak House with you! I read some Charles Dickons when I was younger but haven’t read that one."

Hi Jess. Thank you for responding. I had just been hearing crickets for several days. I was getting a bit discouraged, then along you come! Are you really up for such a monstrous tome? I am excited!
I am a retired veterinarian, so I have plenty of time for reading. I am surrounded by 2 dogs and 2 cats when I read but no baby bookworms. I read an article somewhere about someone waiting to read BH until they were retired. Since I am retired I thought I should give it a go. I have it sitting on the shelf ( because I am a compulsive book buyer and hoarder). When would you like to start? I am open, since I am a “lady of leisure”.
Just let me know.

message 22: by Jess (new)

Jess Combs (jesscombs) | 128 comments I put a hold on for it at the library last night. My daughter works there so hopefully I’ll it my hands on Monday! We could start then. I read a lot of fantasy so 900+ pages doesn’t scare me 😂

message 23: by Anne (new)

Anne (dagdvm) | 441 comments Great! I am close to finishing my present book so that will work just fine.
Do you know how to “start a thread”, because I have no idea.?

message 24: by Jess (new)

Jess Combs (jesscombs) | 128 comments I think I just did it? I haven’t started one before so could’ve done it wrong 😂

message 25: by Christopher (new)

Christopher Herndon | 8 comments I’d be down to join a bleak house read as well.

message 26: by Jess (new)

Jess Combs (jesscombs) | 128 comments Great Christopher! I added a thread for it. We’re going to start on Monday ☺️

message 27: by Anne (new)

Anne (dagdvm) | 441 comments Is the thread separate, and where would I find it?

message 28: by Jess (new)

Jess Combs (jesscombs) | 128 comments It’s under the buddy reads 2023 folder. At least it is if I did it right lol

message 29: by Jess (new)

Jess Combs (jesscombs) | 128 comments Sorry I said folder but meant discussion.

message 30: by Kristie, Moderator (Retired) (new)

Kristie | 5928 comments You did it right, Jess! Thread is here: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

Kristie | 5928 comments Hi all - I saw that there was some interest in a buddy read of Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, so I created a thread here: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/... I wanted to be able to add it to the newsletter in case other people want to join.

Agnieszka (agnieszka7) | 35 comments I'm in the mood for something fun and plan to read at least two of the following this month:
Knitted and Knifed (Knitty Kitty Mystery, #1) by Tracey Drew Knitted and Knifed
A Hot Flash of Homicide by Dawn Dugle A Hot Flash of Homicide unfortunatelly Amazon changed the cover - I really liked this one and the new is so generic blah (I'll add the ACE to GR, though not before I plan to start reading it)
Spy Candy (The Spy Camp Series Book 1) by Gina Robinson Spy Candy
On the Run (Lethal in Love #1) by Susan Amanda Kelly On the Run
Head in the Sand ... and other unpopular positions by Linda M. Au Head in the Sand ... and other unpopular positions - non-fiction

Anyone interested in joining for one of these?

BTW: All are part of KU (got a great deal for the first three months this year and want use it to check out as many new-to-me authors as possible)

I just had to check out the new book cover and completely agree! I would have completely dismissed this one based on the new cover had I just come across it on Amazon. Wouldn't have even read the synopsis.

message 34: by Randy (new)

Randy Gravitz | 7 comments @Kristi I don’t really understand the mechanics of how this works but am intrigued to do a Buddy Read. I frequently choose to vote for a non-winning title, in this case Beasts of a Little Land. I would love to read/listen to it for February 1-28 and have a thread to discuss it with others. Are there Buddies out there who will love this book as much as I think I might. Let’s get together and read/listen to Beasts of a Little Land.

message 35: by Randy (new)

Randy Gravitz | 7 comments I am really trying to expand my book club and Goodreads participation in 2023. I often choose books that are less popular because I have eclectic tastes and varied interests. I loved Island of the Sea Women and I’m hoping Beasts of a Little land has some of the same magic. I also loved The Calligrapher’s Daughter and The Kinship of Secrets so I’ve picked up books about Korea as a minor interest of mine. I return to school on January 17th but hope to continue on my recreational reading pace. I love this idea of a Buddy Read for titles that are not in the running for BotM.

message 36: by Kristie, Moderator (Retired) (new)

Kristie | 5928 comments Hi Randy! You've got the right idea. If there is a book you'd like to read and discuss with a buddy, you just post it here as you did above. Then, if someone else wants to read it too they will comment and you can both start a thread to discuss it in and choose a date to start.

message 37: by Randy (new)

Randy Gravitz | 7 comments I don’t know how to start a thread. I’m promoting my desire in 2 book groups on facebook trying to generate interest. Will you please help me by starting a thread for me?

In case you want to try doing it yourself:
As far as I'm aware this only works in the Browser version (not the app), either on your desktop PC/Mac or mobile device in the internet browser.

Go to the link at the top of the page (second line) saying: Buddy Reads 2023 (if you want keep this page open to follow the instruction, right-click on it and select open in a new tab or open in a new window if you use a desktop computer, or hold on the link until you get a drop-down menu with these options on your mobile device)
Click in the new page that opens on the tiny link left of the group picture saying: new topic.

New thread page opens:
1) In the line below 'Topic' add Book title & Author name (Beasts of a Little Land by Juhea Kim)
2) In the field next to 'This book is about' add Book title and select your book (in this case appears only one)
3) Please don't change the next menu, or if you do it by accident just change it back to 'Buddy Reads 2023'
4) In the 'Comment' field add some information, at least when you want to start, book description can be helpful but is not necessary (in some mobile devices you loose data if you switch between tabs, e.g. if you want copy the blurb or look up this description as the tab is re-loaded each time, should that happen, please don't panic, you've done nothing wrong, it's just the system, keep calm and start from the beginning :-D)
5) Click on the button 'Post' and your thread will be created.

Should you ever notice it's not the way you'd like it to be or discover a typo, you can always edit it or even click on 'Edit' and delete the entire thread (at the bottom of the page) and re-start it.

Have fun!

Sure, I can help you start a thread. I can't guarantee if anyone else is interested in reading the book at this time, but I don't mind if you want to discuss it in the thread and hope for the best.

Update - thread is here: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

No worries. It's not a high priority book for me. I'll get to it sooner or later. Wish you much fun reading it.
