OUT WITH THE OLD, IN WITH THE NEW
2022 is coming to a close and it's time to usher in 2023. A new year offers the possibility of a clean slate. It's the opportunity to discard old things and shed old ways, and create new habits and set new goals. While the rest of the world focuses on exercise, losing weight and healthy eating at the start of the new year, let us in the SRC focus in on our reading habits and bookshelf.
Book 1: Old Ways vs. New Habits
Read a book with either the word "old" or "new" in the title or subtitle.
Book 2: Old Year vs. New Year
Read a book published in either 2022 or 2023.
Book 3: Clean Slate: You Are the Author of Your Own Story
Read a book with a title or subtitle that contains all the letters in "clean slate" or a book whose author's first and last initials are found in "clean slate." Multiple authors are acceptable if all their initials meet the requirements.

Over the last year i have lost 6 stones in weight and taken up lots of healthy exercise. I am a whole new woman I have done this b by following a healthy eating plan and regular exercise. Unfortunately it has meant I have less time to read and cannot complete the SRC as I used to.
Option 1 - Dancing
Whilst I was still very heavy I joined a Bollywood Dance class for the over 50's. I love it and we do demonstrations for all age groups. We have visited schools and danced at awards ceremonies
For this option
a) Read a book set in India (at least 70%)
OR
b) Read a book with the word DANCE(S) or DANCING in the title no alternatives
Option 2 The Gym
More specific exercise routine started at a Gym which uses "Resisted Tension" to exercise every muscle group over a 30 minute period. For women only my Gymophobics membership has seen me lose 39 inches over the 12 month period
For this option
a) Read a book with a title of more than 3 words whose initial letters are in "RESISTED TENSION"
OR
b) Read a book with only women / no men on the cover (at least 1 woman must feature on the cover)
Option 3 Running
More recently I started the 0 -5k in 10 weeks challenge on a mobile app. My "mentor/ coach" for this was Comedian Sarah Millican. Although it has take me longer than 10 weeks to complete I am now there
a) Read a book whose author's initials (first and last) are found in Sarah Millican
OR
b) read a book with MPG Humour

In the various books I read, I keep coming across the poems of, and references to, Emily Dickinson. One of her poems which really stuck with me is “Hope” is the thing with feathers. I think it’s fair to say that the world is pretty grim at the moment, so Hope is something we all need right now. This task is inspired by the poem.
Book 1: Read a book where the author’s initials can be found in EMILY ELIZABETH DICKINSON, or which is set in the US state of Massachusetts, where she lived her entire life.
Book 2: Read a book where the title (not subtitle) contains a word of three or more letters (excluding “and”, “the”) which can be found in the poem. Words must match exactly. Required: state the word.
“Hope” is the thing with feathers -
That perches in the soul -
And sings the tune without the words -
And never stops - at all -
And sweetest - in the Gale - is heard -
And sore must be the storm -
That could abash the little Bird
That kept so many warm -
I’ve heard it in the chillest land -
And on the strangest Sea -
Yet - never - in Extremity,
It asked a crumb - of me.
Book 3: Read a book with one or more birds on the cover. It/they can be photos, drawings or stylised, but must be identifiable as birds. Required: post the cover.

My beloved mother passed away this summer on her 75th birthday due to metastatic breast cancer. As we went through her things, we were reminded that she had a love of 1920s art deco, whether it be jewelry, art prints, or the artist Erte. We are even having an art deco sun pattern put on her headstone.
Art Deco of the 1920s was all about angles, shapes, and unity. In that spirit, we will be challenging ourselves to build the ultimate triangle with this reading challenge.
You will read 3 books.
The total pages of the books must equal more than 750 pages. You can even challenge yourself to get each book as close to 250 pages for the ultimate triangle.
Book 1 – The Triad: My mother rekindled a relationship with an old flame and married him in 2019, mere months before her cancer resurfaced. It brought to light a bunch of love triangles that existed before I was born.
For this book, read a book that features a love triangle or a triad of characters.
Examples: Anything on this list: Literary Love Triangles (non-YA); Three Women by Lisa Taddeo
REQUIRED: Explain how your book fits this task.
Book 2 – Trilogy Ring: Many of my mother’s jewelry, including her first wedding ring, were trilogy rings – a larger stone, flocked by two smaller stones.
For this book, read a book that is part of a literary trilogy. It does NOT have to be labeled as a trilogy, but the series must have no more than 3 books to qualify as a trilogy.
Some places for inspiration are Best Trilogies/Book Series Ever
Note: You do not need to use books from these lists, but if you do, please ensure they meet the requirements of the challenge.
Book 3 -- Bermuda Triangle: One of the most mysterious triangles in the world is the Bermuda Triangle. The indices for this triangle are listed as Miami, San Juan (Puerto Rico) and Bermuda. All three of these areas have a significant Spanish-speaking population.
For this book, you will read a book in Spanish, or a book that has been translated from Spanish. This must be obvious from the GR description.
Here are some ideas: Books Originally In Spanish
REQUIRED: If it is not evident that the book was written originally in Spanish, please provide evidence to show it was

Book 3: Music A musical instrument on the cover. Need not be the complete instrument, but clearly identifiable. Any musical instrument works, for example grand piano, violin, saxophone, flute, drums, marimba. For string instruments, the bow alone does not work, same as drumsticks alone do not work.

The Recovery Journey
Recovery can mean many things and varies dependent upon the person and their community. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA, 2014) defines recovery as: A process of change through which individuals improve their health and wellness, live a self-directed life, and strive to reach their full potential. More information here: https://store.samhsa.gov/sites/defaul...
There are four (4) major dimensions that support recovery per SAMHSA: Health, Home, Purpose, and Community.
1. Option 1: Read a book of 250 pages or more about your hometown or current community:
A. Sub-Option A: Read a book about your hometown, if the description does not mention your hometown, offer another source providing how this connects to your hometown. For example, I grew up in Florida: Southern Literature or Set in or About Florida
B. Sub-Option B: Read a book about your current community (state, state, or identifying group, open to your interpretation). For example, I live in Alaska: Alaska
2. Option 2: Read a book of 250 pages or more about finding meaning and purpose from adversity, substance use disorders, psychological disorders, or chronic health conditions. For example, resilient women keep me going: Resilient Women
3. Option 3: Read a book of 250 pages or more about how you maintain your physical or psychological health. For example, I find Dr. Gregor and the China Study instrumental in my *attempts* to maintain a healthy lifestyle: Nutrition Reading List

I know, I thought I'd seen others add sort of a fakey bonus points thing. I will edit the post to reflect.

Thanks, Sarah. Unfortunately, some people take things literally, and that can create problems.

1. Only 3 options. These options may not include more than 2 "sub options" - 6 total in the task.
2. One book per option.
3. Three books totaling at least 750 pages. Your task idea may require a higher page threshold but this must be disclosed in your entry.

7. A task must be accessible to the majority of players, i.e. not limited to a specific format, edition, publisher, etc. and reviewable by the moderators.
Anyone eligible* to design a task may submit an idea for a task that follows the general guidelines above. Your idea should be a sketch that may be developed with the moderators.
* To be eligible to create a task, the player’s profile must be set up to accept Goodreads messages, and they must not have a task in the current challenge. Only one task per person per challenge.
The group will vote to determine the 50 point task. All ideas that fit the general guidelines will be included in a poll. The poll winner will develop their idea with the moderators to refine their task. The final task may differ from the original idea submission. The task will be posted as close to the midpoint as reasonably possible. The task creator will monitor and answer questions in the help thread.
Please include your Readerboard name and a title for your task. The entries will be listed by Readerboard name and task title in the poll. Please include only one task idea entry per post.
PLEASE DO NOT comment on people's entries in this thread - this is for submissions only - you will be able to comment when voting begins. Comments in this thread will be deleted.
