Just to let you know. Rumor has it she knows a bit about setting up and running challenges. Some in PBT may have run into her work elsewhere."

Tien has been a very long standing member of PBT, and I know she is very experienced with game management!

I mostly lurked and play a game here and there but yes, technically, I've been around long time ;p

There has to be real life pay applicability. Just need to find it. 🤣

LibraryCin | 11664 comments Ha! People talking about finishing their board and doing it again! LOL! I'll be happy if I get through the board all of 1 time in the entire year. :-)

But then, I am not competing, so that helps, too.

message 58: by Robin P (new)

Robin P | 5732 comments If the average roll is maybe 7 and there are 100 spaces on the board, that would be about 15 books for the year to get back to the start. That’s what I thought we were talking about as completing the board, quite doable in a year. If we are talking about all 100 books, that is a different story! Still doable by a lot of us if it weren’t for all the other GR and IRL commitments we have made.

Last year I aimed to do one book/month for each of the annual challenges. I realized that I need to do more than that for PBT Birthday Candles, and it appears I will need to do more than that for Subdue, too! Not sure I'll manage! (It is perpetually in the caboose for me!) Ah, well. If I don't finish in 2023, I plan to roll for myself so that I get through my board once, anyway.

You may swap out for a completely different book!

This was pretty much what I had in mind! I wasn't thinking anyone was completing 100 books.

But we do have awards for things other than getting to the end of the board.

I’m in the same boat. We have to pick a book of equal or longer length. I picked one that is already on my board, more than 15 spots earlier. Is that OK?

Great to hear. I've had it on my TBR for two years, and I'm glad to finally get to it.

message 67: by Ellen (new)

Ellen | 3510 comments How silly is it that I had to swap the next book for another because it had been on my TBR for so long my library doesn't have it anymore?!? Neither do any of the electronic resources I use. Maybe I need to weed out my TBR?

Very interesting suggestions, I hope people respond. For me, I didn't care about winning but I wanted to use this all year to reduce my TBR and was surprised to realize someone could win with only 10-15 books. This game already got me to read several books that were just sitting around. I like that you are looking at options to equalize the game.

message 73: by Theresa (last edited Jan 23, 2023 03:42PM) (new)

Theresa | 15501 comments I too just responded.

Even though I've only read 1 book so far and don't see starting my 2nd for a couple of weeks, keeping me firmly in the Caboose, I too would like to see this continue for more rounds through the year to keep up reading from it. Also, right now I don't have a lot of time to dedicate to reading something except what has to be for a specfic deadline like monthly tag or book club (which happened to be a chunkster this month). but a month or two from now, my current work projects will be at less intense stages and I can read more from my Subdue board and would like to.

I know the teachers in the group often only have time to read in quantity during school breaks - which January isn't usually!

message 74: by Olivermagnus (new)

Olivermagnus (lynda11282) | 4761 comments I responded as well. My goal for the challenge was to read all hundred books but I would like to continue the challenge in whatever way everyone chooses. I love this type of challenge where you get a surprise book chosen. I belong to four or five other groups that do similar picks, just not as a game style. And I can't wait to get into the Caboose!

message 76: by Amy (new)

Amy | 12911 comments I responded too. I don't really know why we need to start a whole new game. Feels to me that the people who finish need to create their next level, but for those of us who just got started, we are still playing.....

message 77: by Hilde (new)

Hilde (hilded) | 472 comments I agree, ditto what Amy said

message 78: by Amy (new)

Amy | 12911 comments Actually, no, I just answered the questions. But since we were discussing it, I just thought to add my opinion. I’m glad to hear other people agree. It seems so silly to start a whole new game when we’re all still playing and there are like 43 of us left. I’m sure Anita will get around to reading this, so I’ve started the discussion here. But what makes sense to me as I said a couple of spaces up, it’s just a create something for the people who have already finished and let the rest of us play this out. And we’re having so much fun with our train ride banter too. I’m at 25. Do I really want to start at zero?

message 79: by NancyJ (last edited Jan 24, 2023 04:54PM) (new)

NancyJ (nancyjjj) | 11061 comments I agree. I wouldn't worry though. Starting a new game was just one of several options on the survey. I didn't pick it either. I'm having a great month (health wise) and I used all my extra energy on this game while everything else was quiet. I had to sprint to keep up with Joy and Lynda's normal pace. LOL. I can't do that again, but I might like to go through my list again at a more leisurely pace.

I wouldn't mind a new round later in the year, with perhaps some longer intervals to slow the pace (e.g. wait longer between rolls).

message 80: by anarresa (new)

anarresa | 433 comments Per NancyJ perhaps some longer intervals to slow the pace if rolls only occured on the 1st and 15th of the month the randomness of the roll and monthly tags would come in to play. It would be a lot easier for Anita :) Some people would likely not finish their board because of low rolls though, annoying the completists. Everyone could stay involved and engaged and clear some books off their lists.

The book clearance was what I am in it for. If the random roll jumps me over a book and I don't feel a strong attachment it is off my list forever.

Joanne (joabroda1) | 12565 comments Anarresa said Everyone could stay involved and engaged and clear some books off their lists.

Agree completely! I made sure I put books on the list that somehow I always pass over. My first (and only) roll was one of these books and ended up 5 stars!

message 84: by Pam (new)

Pam | 498 comments Anita, question on the Swaps:

I used a swap for my most recent Subdue read, and the book I used as a swap fits this month's tag. Do I get the 3 points for that tag? Or does the fact that I had to use a swap to get it cancel out the tag points?

Good question. I thought you could. I think it’s an added way to keep connected to the game and the monthly tag discussions at the same time. But I don’t see a specific note about it. I would add it to your tracking post now just in case, with a note that it was a swap.

Hi Pam,

Yes, you may still record the 3 participation points.

However, when you get to higher loop levels (Porter and above), there is a rule that let's you move forward for a given number of tags. But to get that extra move, you must LAND on the book that is tagged appropriately. A swap won't work there.

But you do garner the participation points on a swap.

message 89: by Pam (new)

Pam | 498 comments Ok, great! Thanks. I’ve been holding off on reading the rules for the higher levels so I don’t confuse myself before I get there :) I’m closing in, though!

@Pam - I have done the same - hard enough keeping Clerk rules straight, especially at my glacial pace!

message 91: by Amy (new)

Amy | 12911 comments What does closing in mean? After never having ever gotten anything less than a 6, a bunch of sevens and wicked eleven's, Cindy rolled my first 4 (2-2). Does anyone consider #73 closing in?

message 92: by Joanne (new)

Joanne (joabroda1) | 12565 comments Yes, I would consider 73 closer to 100, than number 1-LoL-closing in means you are get close to the end

message 93: by Theresa (new)

Theresa | 15501 comments There seems to be a distinct increase in forward movement at Clerk Level by most once they get past about spot 60 on their Gameboard - essentially once they make it to First Class Cafe. I suspect that in part is the result of being able to visualize easily that the number of books needed to be read to get to the end of the board is very manageable unless you roll nothing but snake eyes. There really is a feeling of 'closing in' at that point.

message 94: by Pam (new)

Pam | 498 comments Amy wrote: "Does anyone consider #73 closing in?"

For sure! Amy, you and I were sitting side by side at #69 a few days ago, and I just rolled off the board with the help of a special roll, so I'd say that definitely counts :) I've been really lucky with the large rolls, too. Guess I need to go figure out these new rules now!

Ah, sorry Amy! Looks like you've had some really good rolls, though!

message 97: by Olivermagnus (new)

Olivermagnus (lynda11282) | 4761 comments I need a clarification on the extra dice rule. I'm reading The Sun Sister for my last roll. It's #94 on my current board. Sun Sister is 848 pages so I should be able to roll 5 dice once I finish and post my review. Do I have to take that extra dice roll immediately or can I wait until I start the next board? I hate to waste it on a board that only has six books left. But if that's the case at least I can be pretty sure I'll be rolling off the board soon. Thanks!

message 98: by Amy (new)

Amy | 12911 comments I was going to ask this question in a few days. For the first time ever, my next pick actually matches the tag. What on the clerk level should I do to reflect that and what does it give me if anything?

message 99: by Theresa (new)

Theresa | 15501 comments Amy wrote: "I was going to ask this question in a few days. For the first time ever, my next pick actually matches the tag. What on the clerk level should I do to reflect that and what does it give me if anyth..."

You get 3 participation points if the book you land on matches the monthly tag. I believe you have to read and review it in the same month. Just note it on your tracking thread as you do any extra you get with your rolls and keep a total there too of all participation points earned. You can look at my tracking to see as I earned some of these points.

message 100: by Amy (new)

Amy | 12911 comments OK, then, just to announce it, when I was looking up books on my TBR for the friendship tag, I saw that the book same beach next year by Dorothea Benton Frank, was on the first page. And it’s on my subdue list, because I also on it, and I have a used copy or owned copy in the house. Then I landed on it. So that will be my dual subdue and friendship book, and will mention the three participation points when I read and review it. I have actually finished my other two subdue books for the wicked 11 roll. So I will be posting the other review tomorrow, and I believe same beach is going to happen right after I finish the one I’m starting today. Which is tomorrow x3.
