I have just started my re-read. I agree that it's dated, though not as badly as some books! And it's a series where characterisation and backstory firm up as we go along, so this 'David Audley' isn't not quite the same as the one in later books (if that makes sense). At least he doesn't re-boot his love interest in every new book!

Yes, it was a little dated. I thought it very odd that he got involved with Faith and yet hardly to have seem knocked out by her in any way. However, I liked the fact that Audley was quite human - shown as being afraid and nervous and feeling out of his depth.
I'd be happy to keep reading the series - or jumping about to my 'favourites'.I found the love interest quite reassuringly normal, after James Bondian physical excesses. Understated, but I could believe in it (and by now they must have been married about as long as I have!)

. I have that, although I haven't re-read it at all recently, so I'm up for a buddy read whenever you are! At the moment I've just started relistening to Gunner Kelly, which comes pretty late in the series.
I’ve just finished this and really liked it, so I’d definitely join in for the next one. I liked the fact that Audley was clever but not as clever as he thought he was, quite realistic I would think.
Finished this and did enjoy it. I liked both Audley and the fact the romance wasn't slushy, but fitting to the time it was set. I would also like to see how the series progresses.
Yippee! More people for a buddy read, and for more of my old books to be dusted off.

When an RAF Dakota, presumed lost at sea in 1945, is discovered in a drained lake in Lincolnshire, together with its pilot and a cargo of worthless rubble, it falls to David Audley of the MOD to puzzle out just why the Russians are so interested, and what the plane was carrying that is important enough to kill for.
This was the start of a long-running series by author Anthony Price (1928-2019). Born in Hertfordshire in 1928, Price was educated at King's School, Canterbury, and Oxford. His long career in journalism culminated in the Editorship of the Oxford Times.
