I listened to this as an audiobook sometime in 2020 and I believe it was no more than a couple of years old then. It's set in a fictional tropical island nation and the main character is a girl in her late teens, I think. Although the book itself doesn't come across as particularly YA-ish. I'm pretty sure she's black because I think I remember finding the book through a list of fantasy novels focusing on people of color and I read Children of Blood and Bone around the same time from the same list (which I can't find anymore). She's a princess in a royal family that has magic that has to do with controlling people's blood or bones or something. I think I remember she had to execute someone with her magic pretty early in the book. The plot had some themes around her coming to terms with her family possibly being not exactly the "good guys." And then, I *think* the book ended with her on a ship that has a soul. Or something like that.

Sorry my memory is so vague here! I do remember loving the book, but for some reason I can't remember the title or much about the plot! There was a sequel (maybe more) planned that I think would probably be out by now, or at least soon, and I would love to re-read.
