So I read this 2ish months ago and probably won't reread but I am super excited to discuss it with everyone!
I'm in, because 1. my library lent it to me in paper and 2. the cover praise is from T.J. Klune. Not starting quite yet though.
I have mixed feelings about this book so far (12% in). I find the writing style jarring, but the ideas and characters seem interesting, and there have been moments of beauty. I'll wait and see... :)
Enjoying it more than I feared so far. It's an unusual genre bender, and it's going in unusual directions, which is refreshing but also a bit odd.
I enjoyed it as welll. I needed to turn my skeptical brain off in some parts but it was a fun read
Read through 14 chapters so far. Enjoying it, but it's all going to be connected in the end....right?

I just started this and was sucked in right away, which is unusual but a good sign. I'm loving the characters, and she does a good job of keeping the large cast--for so early in a book--manageable. So I'm looking forward to it. And now I want an Alaska donut...
I was listening to the audiobook while out walking one day and I found myself walking right into the local convenience store and buying a doughnut.

It's really hard to find donuts here, but I did manage to track down a chocolate with chocolate frosting donut like the ones that I preferred in grad school.
The writing about food in this book is so evocative.
Finished February. So far I find this book very thought provoking, charming and entertaining . Looking forward to reading more. I might even have to splurge on a fancy donut from the deli bakery.
To whoever thought to include this book in this month's poll, Thank you! After reading Persephone Station last month (gawdawful!), I wasn't sure if I wanted to give this one a try. Thankfully I did and so far it is truly magnificent. I love the author's style, sensitivity, quirkiness and sense of humor. Again, thanks.
Almost finished and really liking it, but there are some techniques that baffle me. How she handles dialogue with line breaks. And the POV switches are easy to follow but really jarring. And the typos! I'm shocked that a major publisher has so many word errors, even a character named who's not in the scene.
I'm very happy with this story so far, just finished chapter 4! My husband checked this out from the library and loved it so much he bought a copy so I have hight expectations about it.
30% of the way through. Kind of depressing/disturbing for me so far. Went to bed thinking about the story and had trouble sleeping! But it is a nice short book so I should be able to rip through the rest of it pretty quickly.
Elaine wrote: "Almost finished...even a character named who's not in the scene."I noticed the character named but not in scene also. Was puzzled until I figured it was an error. Haven't seen other errors yet.
I just started and have read the first few chapters. I'm liking the setting and the characters as we are meeting them. Super promising start.
I started this earlier today for a break from work. Two hours later and 100 pages in, I'm trying to drag myself back to work for at least a few minutes. I put this book on my list for #16 Scrumptious of the 2023 TBR Cleanup Challenge. Likely this one will be "cleaned up" before 2023.I love the unconventional characters and Aoki's "commitment to the visibility and well-being of Transgender people". (That quote from the author description inside the dust jacket.) I also am really enjoying the rapid shifts in narration. The way Aoki presents two characters' misunderstandings of the same event is fascinating.
I have a hardcover copy and have also noted several proofreading errors.
Two chapters in.Looks like most people enjoyed it, and I love donuts. Donuts with milk, or donuts with coffee and milk, make me smile.
Seems like fantasy so far, which makes me frown.
This book just won the 2021 Otherwise (previously known as the Tiptree) Award which is “an award encouraging the exploration & expansion of gender.”

Thanks for the providing the link!
I absolutely loved this book! It may be my first 5 star book this year. Reading through some reviews, I was quite shocked at some of the faint praise. Whenever something like this happens, I always wonder if they read the same book I did. Or maybe it is down to experiences. I am not gay or transgender, but I am a woman, and I was bullied in school (but thankfully before social media had been invented). I've tried to run away (but not because my dad was a bigot and drunk). This book made me think and it made me feel. If I could just force every person who has belittled or abused or persecuted a person because of who they were to read this book, I would be happy.

"I liked the book too, but I see what you mean - yes, I guess it depends on a personal experience and I'd add a mood when reading the story
