Hi everyone! It's been a little quiet on the group this past month so I'm hoping to stir up some fun ideas of events to host on the group next year so we can inject some more excitement into our reading.

So if you have any event ideas, readathon ideas, or book suggestions for us to read as a book of the month or series readathon then please drop them below!

Lynn (ftbooklover) | 615 comments I don't know about events, but I'd like to do something with mysteries or suspense.

Hi Lynn! It’s been a while, how are you? Ooh ok you know mystery is my fave genre so I’m all for it. Do you mean like a readathon? Or some kind of activity type of event?

A readathon would be great. Yes, I'm okay - still struggling with reading slump. Haven't read much middle grade or YA - focusing more on romantic suspense and romcoms for now. Thanks for asking.

I’ve been through a reading slump too and it’s the worst😭 I also haven’t been reading much of anything: YA, MG, comics or manga! I think I’m coming out of it now though just because I really miss reading and my excitement for it. Hopefully you can get through it too!

A readathon it is! I do really want to do a fun event next year like a treasure hunt type of book event or crossword kind of thing where you have to read certain books to complete the clues or something. I just need to do some research to figure out how I can fully make it work.

That sounds really fun. I did a kind of scavenger hunt the year where I had to look for certain things pictured on covers of books that I was reading.

message 7: by Lynn (new)

Lynn (ftbooklover) | 615 comments Sorry to hear about your reading slump. I've come to the realization that they are just part of being a reader.

Ooh a scavenger hunt! Sounds super fun.

A fairy tale retelling readathon. All age range books accepted

Book to screen readathon. All age range books accepted

MG dragon book readathon

Map of Flames (the Forgotten Five, Book 1) by Lisa McMann book 1 in a series sounds really interesting.

I just heard about that book and thought it sounded good too. Reminds me a little of The Descendants.

@Aurora those are some great ideas!

We did a fairytale retellings readathon at the end of 2021 didn’t we? And we had Movie March this year which covered book adaptations so I feel like we shouldn’t repeat it but if we do we should have a twist to it or something. I’ll keep thinking about that one.

The dragon idea I definitely like. I was thinking we could have like Monster March and Mythical May because you know I love those alliterative titles for March and May😂
Monster March would be a readathon with books that feature monsters or kinda horror-ish books and Mythical May would be for all books with mythical creatures or based on myths. And that one can span a lot because it can be any myth (Greek, Roman, Arthurian, etc etc).

What do you guys think?

message 12: by Kadi, Creator (new)

Kadi P (kadi_p) | 4291 comments Mod
@Annie MythoMay is a much much better name👏🏻 We will now use that instead! And yes! That’s the idea! Plus there are so many great new myth related books out there thanks to the popularity of Riordan’s books that it’d be cool to see how varied our book list will be.

message 13: by AurorainBookland (new)

AurorainBookland | 741 comments I vote for Mytho May too!

AurorainBookland | 741 comments Adventure April an Adventure readathon.

Adventure: an unusual and exciting, typically hazardous, experience or activity.

That could cover anything from books where characters go camping and get lost, participate in extreame sports, or go on a literal adventure planned or not.

J. Bruno | 1 comments My Mytho would be fun.

There was a mystery readathon last year so I'm sure there will be one again this year. Maybe in March. Mystery March has a nice ring to it. Or maybe Kadi has another month in mind for it.

message 26: by Maeve (new)

Maeve Littooij (maevelittooij) | 24 comments I am not very interested in mystery to be honest. My favourite genres are fantasy, adventure and realistic fiction middle grade. So maybe a readathon in one of these genres. Would it be too late to do a bingo challenge? I think that would be a lot of fun.

Music June sounds fantastic!

Maybe we can do an animal readathon? In October? Books about animals or from the perspective of an animal. Books like Pax (Pax #1) by Sara Pennypacker or Crenshaw by Katherine Applegate or The One and Only Ivan by Patricia Castelao

Adventure April gets a yes from me! It’s actually a great idea, I feel like it’s a great way to lead back to what makes mg so fun: adventure! It’s what drew me to mg the most and I definitely would love to revisit that genre.

It’s true we did mystery last year so I actually wasn’t planning on doing it again but that’s because I thought people wouldn’t want to redo it. Me personally I love mystery! I’m up for any excuse to read mystery, it’s my fave genre.

I remember we did it in May last year so it was Mystery May but we can do it in March this year. MythoMay sounds better than Mytho March and yes I’m really choosing when we do readathons based on how the title sounds😂
Actually I’m also just excited to read mystery books now as well!

Patricia wrote: "How about middle grades readathon about music or friendship? Like Music May or Friendship May:)"

I love the sound of Music May but it may (forgive the pun) have to be in June instead. Or July.

I think itd be really cool if we also did like songs that we’d pair with books. Like reading this book reminds me of this song, or soundtracks we think fit a book, etc. Like linking music to the books because that’s a whole other medium we haven’t explored on the group yet. It’s a fantastic idea to include music Patricia!

Animal themed readathon is a great idea! It couldn’t be October though because we already have the horror/spooky annual October readathon for that. So it could be in either July or September.

I don’t normally allow writers to self plug in discussions because it’s against the rules of our group but this series would be great for it. Feel free to recommend it for our mystery readathon book list.

So everyone, thanks so much for all the great new ideas! I know originally I said March was going to be the myth readathon but I’m moving that to May.

So here’s the revised readathon list:

Mystery March
Adventure April
MythoMay
June: Music readathon or maybe music related challenge
July: animal themed readathon
August: august reading challenge
September: school themed readathon?
October: horror/spooky readathon
November: indie readathon (maybe instead of writers showcase)
December

For september I had an idea that books centred around school or high school or college could be interesting. It’s just the idea of back to school and I don’t know. Let me know what you guys think of that.

I like the school theme. If we keep it general everyone can choose what they prefer (MG, YA or adult).

June is the music readathor or music themed challenge maybe next year.

We don't have a challenge for December and there are holidays where families gather and food is served so both those themes could work for December! Great ideas, Patricia.

Hey everyone so I've been working on some fun tasks for the August Reading Challenge and you guys are going to love it, I've managed to think up some creative ones that are fun and yet not hard.

Anyway, I just realised that this year will be the group's 4th anniversary in June! I was wondering if anyone had any cool ideas for events or something we can do to celebrate. I can't remember if we did anything for it last year but for our 2 year anniversary we did a giveaway and I created a new banner for the group so something along those lines or entirely different would be cool and I thought I'd ask on here because you guys helped come up with some great events for this year already!
