I remember that women started having periods again and could get pregnant (because their implants stopped working). The bit that sticks in my mind is that a teen/young female friend of one of the main characters had previously decided to live her life on the web/net and had uploaded herself. Your body then never ages ... because it's a virtual body. But then she 'dies' at the start because there's no more computers to maintain her virtual life. (I don't think this is a spoiler because it's not really anything to do with the plot, was just a detail).

For some reason (maybe they had to leave the cities?), there is a bunch of people migrating across a country (possibly America?) to reach somewhere where they could all meet up to create a new society. I think some women got raped on this journey and got pregnant and had to deal with that.

I think it might have been YA with a heroine who had a mum and/or dad that became key leaders for the new society's future.

I don't even know how much I liked it ... but it's been bugging me for ages so would appreciate the help!!!

I think I've found it (someone else was looking for it). I think it's Dies the Fire (Emberverse Book 1) by SM Stirling. Altho reading the reviews, I am not sure how much I will like it! But worth revisiting.

I think you're right! Thanks. Just skimmed the sample on kindle and it's a better fit with what I remember than the other book. Thanks!
