My memory is a group of friends (two guys and a girl?) playing Dungeons and Dragons (maybe?) somehow are transported to a real-life version of this and become real heroes, staying there permanently. I think this was a series or at least had a sequel. One is a brawny fighter who in-between books/stories does not handle his success well and becomes dissolute and a drunk by the time the next quest/story comes up.
