My impression was that this prompt was purposefully US-centric, to emphasize how much this is happening in a country where this is not supposed to happen. "Land of the free" and all that. Just in this discussion thread, so much fascism has been exposed for what it is.

Late to the party, but I finally received my hold and read Dear Martin. I loooooved it, even though it did make me cry.
This is such an important book -- so of course it is "challenged" in places where people most need to be able to read it.
One of my 5 star reads.

Sucks when the shoe is on the other foot, you ignorant jerks.
I came here for inspiration. Thanks to those of you who recommended Speak. I’ve been wanting to read that one for many years. Just downloaded from my library.

It's one of my all-time favorite books. I first read it when I was 14 and that was like 20 yrs. ago. It still remains my favorite book.
I read “Speak” on Monday. Finished it in one sitting. Excellent book. It’s been on my TBR for years. Thanks to those here who pointed out it is a banned book.

I could go on about the topic of banned books. It makes me angry and it makes me sick. Now that hate is spreading to the city where my sister lives in.
Kym wrote: "@Juanita I read Speak for this prompt too - such an important book!"That's cool that you read it Kym. It really is a great book.
Clearly whoever challenged this book...
never actually read the book. I bought this for my nephew and it talks about how all colors are for everyone.

Yes it's been my impression that most children's books that are on challenged lists were never actually read by the people doing the complaining.

A book that has been banned in some schools for the themes of sexuality and religion is The Poet X. Personally, I loved The Poet X. It talks about many things that should be normalized. The main character, Xiomara, has a history of being sexually assaulted because of her looks and she's afraid to tell her mom because Xiomara thinks her mother would say it is her fault. Something that they talk about that should definitely be normalized is periods. Those were some of the reasons why this amazing book was banned but another one is because Xiomara is questioning her religion. Religion has been forced onto Xiomara by her mom for her entire life and she doesn't know if following religion is the best choice for her.
