SOLVED. Jr Fantasy, read between 2010-2016, was definitely published longer then that. A brother and sister duo get attacked at a motel where they lived. They are taken in my someone who I believe claimed to know their parents. [s]

I remember in the book the brother gets a necklace that is a living snake that grows really big and well as wings a it flies. I remember it can get really hot because at one point he had to take it off be up he got burnt. After they are taken in they live if these weird catacombs and meet a boy a little older then them. The catacombs have a dangerous bug that they have to stay a way from and the older boy had laid out certain floor boards that were safe to step on so the bugs wouldn’t be disturbed. I think a one point they do disturb the bugs and the older boy gets bit trying to save them so they leave the catacombs to find something to save him. I also am pretty sure that there is a bug in a jar the boy has, a lightning bug that makes real lightning and he is not supposed to let anyone know he has it. I remember that the book has a sequel, it is most likely a duo logy rather then a trilogy. I remember in the second book the brother and sister are more involved with everything going on and the brother goes diving to investigate something. He finds a man floating in the water who turns out to be John Smith(the colonizer). I’ve looked everywhere and can’t find a hint of this book, please help.
