Yener | 8 comments I read this book at 1992 so it should be written before that. It is from a European author. Probably Polish or Hungarian?

It is not a short picture book but an actual novella.I know there is a Turkish print, not sure about English translation

Plot: The gnomes live in a magical island protected by storms. A veteran captain manages to pass the storm barrier and reach the island, he kidnaps 2 of the gnomes.
In the finale, gnomes manage to return to the island waters by their boat but they need to pass the storm barrier. The story ends open ended by this cliffhanger.

PS: I am not sure if the cerature were referred as gnomes, dwarves or something else.

Children's book about Gnomes from a stormy Island

Yener, this sounds like a children's chapter book, not a short picture book?

Do you know if this book was published in English?

I copied a few book details to the header/ topic title. Feel free to edit it.

Capn | 3506 comments Were there any illustrations at all? :) Did the gnomes have pointy red hats, for example? Or were just small people?

Regular human skin colours, or were they blue-skinned like Smurfs or something?

Tropical island? Sailing ship or modern freighter?

Can you remember any character names at all?

All the characters were European looking. The gnomes were Northern European types in the book cover. So white skinned. There were no illustrations in the book at all.

The technology were pre-industrial age. So a Sailing boat. I don't exactly remember the island but it never occured to me as tropical. I tend to think it was more like a Baltic or Nordic climate.

Capn | 3506 comments Interesting...

Well, this is a shot-in-the-dark, but you never know...Kalifax

It's a pretty obscure Canadian book, so I don't think it likely. But just in case!

Since I think it unlikely, here are some lists, if you'd like to browse:

Dwarves:

Gnomes:
https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/3...
Non-Tolkien Halflings:

(Does the term 'Tomten', or 'Tomte' sound familiar? That's Swedish (I think?) gnomes..)

Yener | 8 comments I found the book. It was Bosnian. I was confused because the country was Yugoslavia when the book was published.

A friend sent me the Turkish cover. I'll search from there. I don't think there is an English translation. Thanks a lot everyone. I'll still check out the books mentioned in this discussion.

Capn | 3506 comments Ah cool! Thanks for the update! Since German is more comfortable for me, I'll link to Der Zwerg aus dem Vergessenen Land for the trackable. :) In English, that's "The Dwarf from the Forgotten Land"
