Cover details: the cover of the book has a young boy submerged in water up to the shoulder, while a weasel like creature perches on him.
Book details: it has several illustrations throughout the book.
Plot I remember:
The book switches perspective between two characters, a boy and a girl. If I rememeber right the boy is the reincarnation of, or age regressed hero/champion of a magic realm. He was brought to earth to protect him from a danger in that realm.
He was not alone in his journey as another famed warrior is also brought along and was age regressed for some reason and replaces a family's recently born child.
The boy and the girl each live in separate abusive circumstances. If I am right they live in the same trailer park, where a magic tree from their realm quietly grows. The boy is often made to sleep on the porch/ sun room instead of his home by his relatives/parents (?)
The girl has an abusive mother who often hurls insults at her and eventually the magic tree goes wild and lashes an insult onto the abusive mother's face.
The boy and girl escape their abusive situation learning about the realm that they're from and journey to europe, quite possibly switzerland to find a magic portal.
At one point the girl consumes a lembas like bread and quite like willy wonka she becomes bloated by it. Because of her size they end up almost crashing their vehicle off a cliff, but they use her to propel back by squishing her (very weird.)
The way they access the portal has to do with the lake or mountains singing at a certain time of day and they have to dive into the lake at that moment. They later discover it means when a tourguide blows a trumpet/instrument creating echoes in the area.
The book ends with them arriving in the realm.
A final detail I remember was that at the end of the book it declared it would be part of a series.
