It was contemporary. Different groups of people could shift or partly shift into one animal. The heroine was special/partly outcast because she was multiple animals. She also healed faster when/after she had relations.

I don't have much regarding the plot, but I know she had at least one male ally.

She's captured at one point by the antagonists, and she "smells" of different animals for the various questioners that come to interrogate her.
