Protagonist is 12ish year old boy rediscovering magic - definitely published 2009 or before

I remember only fragments of this book but I loved it and I remember thinking there would be a sequel. Boy is main character living with grandfather or other male guardian. He begins to remember magic from when he is little. He starts to “re see” a guardian animal that he can communicate with. He learns how to scry while battling a dark force. I believe it takes place in Britain. In the end he befriends a girl who helps him. I think the guardian might own a bookstore.
